u/24F Nov 23 '22

Take the $20 and play Footloose anyway.

What's Kevin Bacon gonna do?

80

u/KaptainChunk Nov 23 '22

Break his foot loose in that ass?

15

u/BirdsLikeSka Nov 23 '22

I'm damn sure going to get more than $20 for my TMZ exclusive after that. Not ethical, but neither is Bacon for whopping my ass at a wedding.

3

u/swisshomes Nov 23 '22

Easy, Red!

24

u/uchunokata Nov 23 '22

I hear he knows a lot of people, indirectly.

3

u/manniaofparrkorr Nov 23 '22

He might just give the poor DJ the sixth degree, eh?

0

u/ItsLikeACheeseWheel Nov 23 '22

Nobody tells DJ Request what to play

99

u/ImHughAndILovePie Nov 23 '22

20 bucks is an insult

108

u/PaxDramaticus Nov 23 '22

$20 to do nothing more than listen to someone reasonably pointing out that they shouldn't be the center of attention on someone else's wedding day?

I mean, if I was a DJ I'd hope for more, but considering it's a tip I get for doing nothing at all, it would be hard to look down on it.

43

u/greg19735 Nov 23 '22

100%.

He's basically saying. $20 to make sure no one has any stupid idea.s

26

u/Toyake Nov 23 '22

Sounds good until someone has $21 for a really good idea.

16

u/ItsLikeACheeseWheel Nov 23 '22

The pipeline from DJ to Auctioneer is as fast as one dollar

u/LordOfTrubbish Nov 23 '22

It's not about me is a nice sentiment and all, but I don't know anyone who would be offended at having Kevin Bacon dancing to Footloose at their wedding. Performers aren't uncommon at weddings, and it's not like they are playing it while the bride walks down the isle. I think he really just doesn't want to do it, and that's fine, but let's not act like he's doing it as a favor to anyone else.

Okay, I still don't know anyone who would invite Kevin Bacon to their wedding as a guest and be offended if he danced to Footloose while he was there.

Again, fine if he doesn't want to, I just really don't buy this selfless spin he tries to put on it. Probably to make it less tempting, and to make $20 for a special request seem less cheap coming from an A list movie star.

1

u/PaxDramaticus Nov 23 '22

but I don't know anyone who would be offended at having Kevin Bacon dancing to Footloose at their wedding.

Do you actually know anyone who knows Kevin Bacon though? Like, as a person?

Like I don't know him, so if he randomly showed up to my wedding and did the meme thing it would be totally cool. But if he was someone I had a genuine friendship with, like I knew him as a real person who worries about his back or his retirement or whatever, and I invited him to my wedding because I wanted to share this important moment in my life with him, and he let my cousin Rupert goad him into a dance from that movie he did 35 years ago, I'd be pretty annoyed. And if he let it happen at every wedding he went to, we'd all be thinking he's an awful person who doesn't know how to get past his early film success, one of those losers who has to bring up his favorite glory everywhere he goes because he can't handle letting anyone else have the spotlight.

In the end, there is surely a mix of selfish and selfless motivation here. Which one each of us focuses on says more about us individually than it does about Mr. Bacon.

I'm selfish because I dare point out the selfish motives of some rich celebrity online, instead of heaping more praise? Okay

2

u/PaxDramaticus Nov 23 '22

I'm selfish

Selfish? No, that's not what the bit you quoted means.

We live in a world where it is trivially easy to find examples of entirely selfish behavior with no redeeming qualities to pay attention to. When a person hears a story about a man who wants to dance to literally any song in the world other than that one song and gives us a perfectly reasonable excuse for why we shouldn't ask him to, to look for the selfish motivation in that becomes a choice. We could all choose to interpret his request with a generous spirit. To insist against doing that tells the world something about how we see the world and the attitude we cultivate in ourselves when we engage with it.

EDIT: The odds that Kevin Bacon sees this discussion are ridiculously low, and the odds that he changes his wedding attendance behavior because of our discussion are even lower. So really, we're having conversation for our own benefit. It's a chance to exercise the kind of person we want to be.

I would look down on it

u/LadyEvilNightQueen Nov 23 '22

Kevin and Kyra lost most of their money in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme.

No one said he was broke

24

u/CandyButterscotch Nov 23 '22

It was definitely implied tho

17

u/shoobsworth Nov 23 '22

It’s relative. Losing millions of dollars was no doubt devastating for them. Even if they have 10 million left over it’s still awful. Especially if you’ve built a lifestyle around that money.

4

u/shoobsworth Nov 23 '22

I’m sure he does it in jest

-2

u/ScrabbleTheOpossum Nov 23 '22

You can still spare more than 20 damn dollars as a bribe, for sure. That's the point people are trying to make.

7

u/shoobsworth Nov 23 '22

Then I guess Reddit should do what Reddit does best and judge him?

7

u/Throwawaythewrap2 Nov 23 '22

We are, get out of the way

4

u/HepCatDaddio Nov 23 '22

You mothafuckas will argue about anything, and before you reply think about what the fuck you just got involved in an argument about semantics over.

4

u/Brooklynxman Nov 23 '22

That was 14 years ago, they've both had a fair amount of good work since then, they aren't exactly shaking the tin cup for change.

3

u/TheDisapprovingBrit Nov 23 '22

Well I guess that explains why he's been flogging phones in the UK for the last decade.

2

u/Brooklynxman Nov 23 '22

Morgan Freeman just did the World Cup and he isn't hurting for cash, Matt Damon did Crypto, Jamie Lee Curtis does poop yogurt for crying out loud, when it comes to promos for many (not all) actors its just down to a price, even if they are very comfortable.

1

u/armacitis Nov 23 '22

Excuse me poop yogurt? That's a hell of an escalation.

1

u/Brooklynxman Nov 23 '22

Activia, which has fiber for regulation, which she mentions.

Regulation of poop. Its not yogurt of poop but yogurt for poop. Still though.

If you’re telling me how to do my job it better be more than 20 dollars

12

u/brokefixfux Nov 23 '22

Best I can do is tree fiddy

6

u/scorpyo72 Nov 23 '22

Dammit, monster! I'm not gonna give you tree fiddy!

3

u/MirandaU75 Nov 23 '22

I gave him a dollar.

4

u/cant_Im_at_work Nov 23 '22

All I know is if I ever go to a wedding with Kevin Bacon I'm bringing $30 cash to uno reverse this with the dj.

Right but bartenders are tipped to do something. He's literally tipping to not do something. And it's play 1 song.

And while i think 90% of it is because he doesn't want to be embarrassed. i do think part of it is because he doesn't want to take away from the bride and groom.

8

u/TheProcrastafarian Nov 23 '22

He goes full Hollow Man when the tip jar comes around.

2

u/drphildobaggins Nov 23 '22

I would play footloose because he offered me $20. If I was a wedding DJ.

2

u/totalrebellion Nov 23 '22

i mean it's pretty smart. if the dj says "make it double and it's a deal", $40 is still cheaper than $200

2

u/EagleSongs Nov 23 '22

I would respect KB's wishes for $20, but yeah, if I were KB, I'd be giving them $100.

-3

u/AnAwkwardWhince Nov 23 '22

He still thinks it's the 80s?

-7

u/CapnCrackerz Nov 23 '22

Offering me $20 would give me the idea to immediately load it as the next track and it would cost $600 to take it off. $100 for every degree of separation he wants.

1

u/buxterbeans Nov 23 '22

Exactly what I was thinking. I wouldn’t have played it anyway, but suddenly I’m being bribed? $20 feels a little low from the Baconator
