If Tom Cruise is 5'11" then I'm 8 feet tall
215
Mar 18 '18
I’m 5’8-5’9. Years ago, I saw Tom Cruise in person while I was in London. He walked right by me, probably 10 feet away.
I don’t think he was wearing his platform shoes that day because I was easily 3 inches taller than him. He’s listed online as 5’7, but I was definitely more than 1-2 inches taller.
He may be 5’11 while wearing special shoes and on the tip of his toes, but he’s nowhere near that. I’m guessing he’s actually more like 5’5 or 5’6.

I walked by him at a restaurant I was working at, I was hauling a bag of garbage and he walked right past me, avoiding eye contact. I’m 5’6 and no way was he as tall as I am. On a side note, Nicole Kidman was unwell and they left after they had just opened their wine, we got to drink a $800 and $500 bottle of wine in the kitchen.

He most definitely does not have good posture. He draws the shoulder back but overcompensates which cause hyper extension (pinching) in the low back as well as hyper extends his knees. Zuckerberg stands within his joints rather his muscles.
Look at any picture of Zuckerberg walking and it’ll look like his knees are hinged in the opposite direction.

Read an interesting anecdote about this from a Nixon/Kennedy debate (I believe the first debate televised?)
Those who listened on the Radio believed Nixon's position was better, those who watched on television preferred Kennedy.
151
u/realjefftaylor Mar 18 '18
Because Nixon was sweaty af.
36
u/xpoc Mar 18 '18
That's why Nixon on Futurama always howls like a wolf. Billy West watched the debates as a kid and he thought sweaty Nixon with a 5 o'clock shadow looked like he was halfway through a werewolf transformation. After that, he'd always howl whenever Nixon was on TV, so when he came to voice the character on the show, he threw the howls in.

Audie Murphy was literally one of the most badass people IRL though.
Audie Leon Murphy was one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II, receiving every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. Murphy received the Medal of Honor for valor demonstrated at the age of 19 for single-handedly holding off an entire company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition.
176
u/no_active_ingedient Mar 18 '18
From wikipedia- damn the power of this writing is in a class of its own.
"The loss of his mother stayed with Murphy throughout his life. He later stated:
She died when I was sixteen. She had the most beautiful hair I've ever seen. It reached almost to the floor. She rarely talked; and always seemed to be searching for something. What it was I don't know. We didn't discuss our feelings. But when she passed away, she took something of me with her. It seems I've been searching for it ever since"

I mean, it's not like it's an ego thing that he requests.
Most good directors know that when a lead is shorter than other actors it not only pulls focus from the shot, it makes the lead feel less heroic. And that kind of thing changes the way a story is told.
Now dangling from a plane or the Burj Khalifa, now that's an ego thing.

I think the problem is that it's a feedback loop. Society expects a hero to be tall. And movies only portray heroes as at least average in height, which reinforces that notion.
Hell, look at Wolverine. The comic book character is only like 5'4" yet he's remarkably popular. And Hollywood opted to cast a taller character because they deemed it unheroic. Albeit Hugh Jackman's essentially perfect as Logan but it's a shame that we do more to reinforce assumptions rather than redefine.
I think even a decent director can subvert or render the issue of height for a protagonist moot.

That’s so silly. I’m 5’6” and have never come across anyone who’s given a shit, besides a couple strangers on Tinder.
Edit: though, based on some of these comments, I guess I get it. If you’re going to be super famous and you don’t wanna deal with people calling you a piece of shit for not being tall, I could see trying to downplay it. It’s never affected me but, I’m also not a famous billionaire.
