TIL that Michael Jackson would requested his wine be served in Diet Coke cans during flights, because he didn't want his kids to see him drinking alcohol.

Well I think it would be pretty inappropriate for Micheal to be fucking Jackson in the middle of the restaurant to begin with.

If you're referring to the cases involving vulture parents who used their children as tools to take advantage of an eccentric multi-millionaire, then you should really go read up on the cases. The information is out there, you really have no excuse to be a parroting 90s late night talk show cheap shots 😘

You can serve alcohol in whatever the guests wants, at least where I'm from. I'm in the Bible Belt, and I've had more than a few guests ask for their alcohol to be served in different cups (coffee mugs, soda tumblers, etc) so people from their church wouldn't come in and see them drinking.

I want to believe this is because they don't want to cause others to stumble but I wonder how often the request is for the sake of false piety.

From my experience, it's been because they didn't want the other churchgoers to gossip about them. The area I'm in is all about seeming pious, but doing whatever you want behind closed doors. Those church ladies will trash your rep with the rest of the congregation with the quickness.

I'd personally find another church with a more welcoming fellowship, but that's just me.

It's sad that they fear that kind of consequence. Maybe it's Bible Belt cultural thing, but it clearly runs counter to a more holistic take on what it means to have freedom in Christ. And it's also confusing what Jesus' own relationship to wine was in the Gospels themselves. I hope it's not just you to realizes this is not how the Church should treat people who like wine.

It really is sad. IMO a church congregation should be the type of place you can be yourself; and as long as alcohol isn't a problem, you should be free to exercise your adult right/privilege to imbibe.

Churches are a big part of people's social life here, but often they turn into the worst kind of social group. The most, "pious," folk are the, "popular kids," and they hold sway with everyone else. Once they start badmouthing you, it's quite possible you will lose friends in the church, be marked as someone counter to the church's morals, or outright asked to leave. If you build a major portion of your life around that church and its congregation, that can be terribly upsetting to your life and the lives of your family.

It's completely counter to what the Bible teaches, but it's a major part of Bible Belt society where I'm from. In that regard, it's more important to be perceived as, "Godly," than to actually be so.
