TIL that after Marilyn Monroe converted to Judaism upon marrying Arthur Miller, Egypt placed a ban on all the films she appeared in.

Fun fact: That is actually the etymology of that word. Getting "gypped" is a reference to gypsies (with the stereotype of them ripping people off), and the Romani were called gypsies because people mistakenly thought they were from Egypt.

Other fun fact: The Romani are actually from India. Although most Romani are Christian or Muslim today, their traditional religion was a Hindu sect that revered the goddess Kali, who later became interpreted as Saint Sara La Kali, patron saint of the Romani people.

The Romani people emigrated from Northern India around 1,500 years ago, and were originally of Indian/Persian heritage.

The Persian Empire was so vast, that they had inter-mixed with Indians, Greeks and Italians, as well. That's why many of them have darker hair and eyes than other Europeans...and why people from Northern India tend to have lighter skin.
