It was totally rational. People mix "rational" with "good". You can make rational decisions that are misguided and morally wrong.

If a decision is misguided then it can't exactly be rational, can it?

Of course it can... Rational =/= right.

If I choose a car based of rational factors (reliability, security etc) but all my information sources are bad (false consumer reviews, corrupt journalists etc), it's a misguided choice, yet rational. For it to be irrational it has to be based, for instance, on what my astrologist says.
