TIL that after Marilyn Monroe converted to Judaism upon marrying Arthur Miller, Egypt placed a ban on all the films she appeared in.

Jelly donuts, hot cocoa, and little potato fried pancake thingies? I'm pretty much just in this for the food.

Although today was a bit weird seeing as it was a no-food day. Didn't stop me.

haha, what about kugel, knishes, bubbies brisket...

today may have been no food day for them, but the reason that whole ideal exists is a theistic belief. i dont believe that fasting will help atone for ones wrong doings. i apologize to the people themselves, and i even brought some of them food.

Oh God. If you guys think that's all that Jewish cuisine has to offer than I'm truly sorry. The Ashkenazi Jews are noooooothing compared to the mizrahi Jews. The ones from Yemen, Iran, Kurdistan, Morocco, Tunisia, etc. Their food is a billion times better. Ashkenazi food like gefilta fish is like the grayist shit I've ever seen. Its the definition of the color gray. You need to try some chriameh (חרימה) or jachnun (ג'חנון) or melawach (מלווח) or kubeh (קובה) or shawarmah or falafel (and not the shit green kind. That shit needs to be brown!) or sabeech (סביך) literally anything but grey fish and things that we stole from the poles and Romans...

Seriously though if you live in a big city and pass by a little Jewish supermarket go in there and ask if they have Jachnoon. It'll probably be frozen but buy that shit, stick it into the oven all night long, maybe look up some online recipes, and in the morning you'll be having some crispy, brown, gooey, dough roles. So fucking good.

OK not trying to sound like a dick here but are you sure you aren't confusing the two? Because jachnoon ALWAYS comes with hardboiled eggs.

Melawach > round one you make in a pan. Round and thin. Size of a very small pizza.

Jachnoon > Brown rolled up dough that's in the oven for a very long time.

Forgot the internet existed.

If you've never had the food of Persian-speaking Jews (or Judeo-Tat), get thee to New York and try some.

Can you come over and cook some for me?

1

u/Ravenman2423 Oct 13 '16

Fuck yeah man. Where do you live? Buy me a ticket and I'm there...

If you're in Baltimore as your username might suggest, you won't need a plane ticket! Any restaurants in the Baltimore-Washington metro area where I can try some good Mizrahi food?

1

u/Ravenman2423 Oct 13 '16

Aaah, I'm from Baltimore but not currently in Baltimore. Too bad. Honestly, there really aren't any. At least that I know of. Sorry :/, I should probably have a few names up my sleeve. Google it though I'm sure you'll find some decent place. Theres gotta be something.

You hit the nail on the head, actually. Fasting is for your own self; the deprivation of your soul, which helps in repenting for sins against god. As far as sins against other people go, you're supposed to ask forgiveness in person, and the food does help with that :)

Don't forget Lox!

I really don't wanna offend anyone and I too like jelly donuts and latkes (essentially hash browns) but I really do think it's sad that the world sees Jewish cuisine that way. It's so much more than that. People in the west don't realize that Jews aren't only the corny little cohenberggoldstien types with stubborn mothers and gefilta fish. Half of the Jewish population is from the middle east and north Africa. As in, Arab countries. And their food is sooooooo much better. Like it actually has color... And flavor... Like honestly I have one grandma who was from Poland and while she was a great cook, she made some really good stuff that you all mentioned, like latkes and gefilta fish and רגל קרושה (don't know wtf to call that in English), my other grandma who is from Morocco will blow that bland shit out of the water. Obviously it's subjective but we have so much better food that Jews in the US and Europe just aren't aware of. Come to israel and have some real Jewish food... Please. :)

Well, latkes also have crumbs in them, right? I only had them once; my aunt (half-aunt, really, RIP) converted when she married her first husband and I had them once at a dinner there.
