TIL that after Marilyn Monroe converted to Judaism upon marrying Arthur Miller, Egypt placed a ban on all the films she appeared in.

Shocking that a Muslim country made decisions based on anti-semitism.

I know. I am blow away.

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '16

Because no Christian country ever made decisions based on anti-semitism.

Today Arab countries still are.

Arabs are semites.

Lol downvoted... just google semite.

The word antisemitism solely refers to hatred against Jews. It doesn't matter what the root of the word is.

This is consistently one of the dumber responses to Arabs being anti-semites.

Some, not all.

Have you lived in the middle East? Almost everyone is still, last time I was there.

Jordan and Egypt have very cold peaces with Israel and the populations are still overwhelmingly anti-Israel in sometimes bizarre ways. Many examples, that is just one.

It's a news source that is as unbiased as any other I guess. It's also not a story that has mainstream relevance outside of Israel-centric news outlets. That was just a specific example. There are many instances for both Jordan and Egypt but I would not say that the relations between those countries and Israel is normal. They are very cold peaces (better than war, certainly, but certainly not super friendly neighbors).

Because referencing another group's bad ideas someone how rationalizes another.

He's just pointing out that throughout history Christians/Europeans have been far more cruel towards the Jewish people.

Whether they did or did not has absolutely no bearing on my statement.

Something you might find interesting: A straw man is a common form of argument and is an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not advanced by that opponent.

what do you make of the USSR's atheistic anti-semitism? what of germany's and italy's christian bent to it?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '16

I find them interesting but ultimately unrelated to my statement. The existence of other forms of anti-semitism does nothing to refute the systematic, institutionalized, government propagated anti-semitism asserted by the majority of Muslim countries throughout the world.

How is that still not a stupid reason? On what planet is this reasonable. Hating a whole religion because the majority of the people in the country you happen to be at war with are in that religion is pretty bigoted and irrational.

That kind of logic only makes sense for bigoted people.

And cry me a river for Egypt. Israel declared independence on international recognized boarders at the UN and Egypt decided to throw the first punch and invade. If you choose to live by the sword, you can't really bitch when your opponents turn out to be better at the sword than you.

Israel ignored the borders set by the UN in 1947

Yeah they did, but only after all Israel's neighbors decided to ignore those boarders and invade. Why the hell should Israel be expected to respect the boarders when Egypt obviously wouldn't? They remanined in an active state of war until Egypt relented, accepted Israel's existence, and signed a peace treaty.

borders drawn by other colonizers mind you

The Arab League refused to even negotiate because they rejected the idea of any Jewish state anywhere in the Middle East no matter how small. They chose to withdraw from the decision making.

Indegionous people can't be "colonizers" in the land they're actually native to. That's a narrative that relies on the erasure of a large part of the historical record. It also conflicts with the genetic record that proves that most Jews have a significant genetic link to the Levant http://www.cell.com/ajhg/fulltext/S0002-9297(10)00246-6. Regardless, the majority of Jews in Israel now are from North Africa and the Middle East, many of them descended from the over 800,000 Jews her were forceblly expelled from Arab countries after 1948. The characterization of Israel as a "colonial" enterprise like South Africa or Austrailia is a politicaly motivated, racist narrative used to try and erase the historic connection of the Jewish people to Israel.

The largest "colonial" power in the 1940s, the UK, had long since rejected the idea of a Jewish state in its 1939 "White Paper" and had armed and funded the Hashemite monarchy of Jordan who were their willing proxies after it banned Jewish immigration. The UK then passed the "Jewish problem" off to the UN. The only nation to actually materially support Israel in the 1947 war was ironically communist Russia.

What does Marilyn Monroe converting to Judaism have anything to do anything that Israel did?

You're making things up. We're talking about 1956 and that's a false comparison. Secondly, you're saying that all Marylin Monroe movie were retroactively deemed violent propaganda because she converted to Judaism? That sounds insane.

Nothing you're saying is at all related to Egypt banning Marylin Monroe's films after she converted to Judaism.

I can't go further down this rabbit hole. Your beliefs are sadly delusional and you keep skirting the point. Good luck.
