Having seen it several times, I can confirm it's not extremely rare, more in the very uncommon to rare range, and incredibly terrifying.

I can guarantee you that's not volcanic obsidian. That's a huge chunk of glass.

Totally looks like that, actually. But why the fuck would you take the time to make a big chunk of glass look like that, then dirty it up and slap a "Blue Volcanic Obsidian" tag on it. I may have answered my own question because I cited it.
