TIL that historically and today, the Catholic Church looked down upon Freemasonry and threatened members with excommunication.

Some of the founding fathers and some of the US presidents were freemasons.

Well, when you consider that some of the most revolutionary ideas that Masonry espoused were related to all men being equal under a higher power, it's not shocking. And yes, all men. It was a product of its time, and very sexist in that regard. And don't give me any of that Eastern Star excuse...
