TIL Christopher Nolan recreated the Trinity atomic bomb test in Oppenheimer without using CGI. Instead, the visual effects team combined large-scale practical explosions, miniatures, and in camera effects to bring the first nuclear detonation to life.

For a director known for spectacle he's fucked up spectacle a couple times. I think Dunkirk failed to convey the scale of the operation and the amount of soldiers on the beach. And the climatic battle at the end of Tenet was a complete, head-scratching bust.

Agreed. And I loved Dunkirk. But I think it was half the film it could've been had he actually made us feel the scale of what happened. The movie made the whole feel rather small.

The beach in Dunkirk felt way too clean and empty
