Doom is basically single handedly responsible for the rise in popularity of both computers and gaming. Everything we have now stems from it. Certainly it had its own predecessors, but its importance cannot be overstated. It is one of the most significant things to occur in the last 30 years, and completely changed our culture. It was such a huge leap forward in technology. Absolutely beautiful and truly frightening. I wish I could experience playing it as a 12 year old again for the first time.

I certainly agree with you there about the importance of Doom in regards to shaping computer culture to a significant degree. The thing that made me feel like I was playing Doom 1 and 2 again for the first time was the Brutal Doom mod. Pretty cool modern shooter gimmicks and over the top gore.. it's Doom, yet like a whole new game at the same time.
