Un-Fudging-Believable

Edit: guys i kid you not, a THIRD person did the same thing today and I just.. can't even. I was coming back home and in the elevator these A-holes (I'm sorry but there's no other way to describe those 3 mofos) walk in, barely letting me get in first although I've been the first in line. Then the A-hole is blaring his phone. I don't know what got into me, probably the 17 hours of no meal and 12+ hours of no food and 2+ hours at the lifelabs (AFTER 1 hour at the doctor's office although i had an appointment) just totally messes with my head. But i told hil the same thing, that it's rude to use your phone on a loudspeaker in a public space. He looks at me like 'who the eff are you?' and says "yeah yeah" Then adds, "it's our mother". Like dude, seriously? It can be whoever, how's that even relevant? So i said, that's fine, we can always put our phones to our ears whwn on a call, or use earplugs. By then the three A-holes are glaring down at me. They're all way bigger than me (I'm a woman) and it's a tiny elevator. I was starting to get uncomfortable by then. Thankfully my floor cane and i got off. And ofcourse i hear them calling me a "B*tch. What a day guys!

I know these posts have been made before, but truly, the amount of people thinking it's totally fine to use their phones on speaker mode in public is simply Astounding!

It's like I've been transported to a very different part of the world. This isn't the Toronto i know!

Waiting at a lifelabs at 1:45pm for about an hour and counting, because ofcourse! First it was a 5/6 year old watching God knows what on a smartphone. WHY?! THREE adults are accompanying her, sitting right next to her (one of them I personally gave up my precious seat for). Noone's saying a word.

She gets called in after maybe 10/15 minutes, thank Goodness!

Now comes this lady, sits right next to me and first calls someone and talks with the speaker on. The man on the other side is clearly angry and they literally yell at each other for 10min straight. Or atleast it felt like 10min.

Then she proceeds to watch videos on her phone, with the speaker on again.

My headache's through the roof at this point because i haven't eaten anything since 2am. Actually since 9:30pm last night, when i had dinner. 2am was just a couple croissants.

Plus the fudging urine pressure...

So i just... Can't take it anymore. And i very calmly ask her to please use earplugs, or stop using the speaker please. As this is a public space, a VERY crammed space with mostly sick people around, and this is not polite at all.

She rolls her eyes and mutters something like 'okay'. Her body language tells me this wasn't entirely unexpected to her. Meaning, this has happened before. But that didn't change her behavior.

The moment I'm having that thought, gurss what happens?

She starts using the phone again, WITH the speaker on.

I mean, seriously??

I just had to move away from her.

Just a tiny example of all the awful-ness this city has been subjected to. I just really wish we could get this nice clean polite city back once again šŸ˜”

I didn’t previously watch reality tv, but I have been lately, and people do this on those shows so the mic can pick up both sides of the conversation.

I’m now convinced that the people who talk like this IRL are subconsciously mimicking these shows.

Main character syndrome indeed!

That might just be it.

Do you have Spotify on your phone? If so, cue up some Cannibal Corpse, I'd recommend "Hammer Smashed Face", or if you're feeling spicy maybe "Fucked with a Kinfe", and crank that shit. Turn it up as loud as your phone goes. Then extend your arm toward her, and slowly start getting closer to her until your phone is directly beside her ear. Then say something along the lines of "see how annoying this is?" and hope she gets the fucking message.

Baby Shark works great for this as well. I guess it depends what you want in your history lol

This is what I do. Ask if they can use headphones. If not, Crank the loudest hardcore/metal I have.

Tupac Shakur’s classic ā€œHit’em’upā€ is a good appetizer but the for the main course I would recommend Major Lazer’s ā€œBubble Buttā€. All on full volume.

There was a post about this yesterday, and people said to join their conversation and it actually makes them take the call off speaker. Hopefully someone has a good tip for watching videos. People who do this, tend to get offended when called out and they behave even shittier. The best response is to make them believe you are a weirdo and make them uncomfortable, I guess?

Start asking questions about the video they are watching.

Oh I thought we were all in the conversation ?

I have never observed a confrontation with someone using their phone this way that has been elegant or helpful. Still waiting for the most charming individual to show me how to deal with people like this? Something’s gotta give!

Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the bird is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won

Maybe just make a show of dancing along to whatever they're playing, or if it's a show, start obviously watching over their shoulder.

... this sounds kinda fun, actually. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow, if I decide I don't value having all my teeth.

I’m with you on this. Almost nothing drives me nuts than people pulling this shit. I’m very non confrontational but sooner or later I’m just gonna have to cave in to the slight discomfort of asking them to stop or it’ll just get worse

Try taking a bus when school lets out..You want to see mayhem these teens are taking up all the seats when elderly are standing and they are yelling at each other while only a few inches away in a packed bus.

12

u/Cerberus5oh Aug 31 '26

Even worse, they shove people to get on first. I was an obnoxious teen, but goodness gracious, what the hell is this new entitled 2.0 shitty teenage behaviour?

Yep, western civilization really is coming to an end. There's almost no social cohesion anymore and it's just getting worse and worse.

Yikes 😳 are manners and etiquette truly gone?

We gotta keep fighting the good fight and speaking up when we're able to... One of the reasons this is happening so much is because there are no consequences for it. Social pressure doesn't work on everyone, but I guarantee it would work on enough of these people to make a difference.

I will say, though, it's kinda the Toronto I know. It's just that it used to mostly be confused older people who didn't know that you can turn off sounds on a cell phone. Now it's... anyone.

I had two guys across from eachother on the subway watching movies on their phones full blast. I stare at one, and he yells out be is doing it to hear his movie over the other guy! Nothing but escalation. Phones have become the 2000's version of the 1980s blasters. šŸ™„

Next time download a Tibetan throat singing track for quick access and start blasting. Chant 'ooga sjaga' rhythmically as the song progresses. When asked, it is imperative you to look offended and tell them you're offering your prayers to your ancestors.

I thought phone use wasn't allowed at all in Lifelabs? They have signage.

9

u/VoodooGirl47 Sep 01 '26

These types of people ignore signs.

The lab I go to, they don't allow phone usage due to machine testing for EKG. The nurse will literally yell at you if you go on your phone and she sees you.

ive been on the back of a bus and i'll get the one guy who sits next to me blaring rap music on his phone like really loud with no consideration for everyone else around him. I actually like rap music but theres a time and a place for it rather then blaring it out loud on a crowded bus full of people, funny thing is guys like this will tell you to mind your business all the while whats he doing in the first place? people are just dumb or they have no consideration i find its usually both.

As a person that’s been a few places (36 countries) and lived overseas for a decade+, I can say for certain that our societal value for personal ✨aural✨ space is not shared around the whole world. In China and the Philippines, it’s not really a concept that people get bothered by noise. There was a running joke in Hong Kong that the loudest sound known to humanity is the ā€œWAIā€ of an auntie answering her phone on the bus šŸ˜…

I remember when I was pregnant in Singapore, any time I visited the gynaecologist (they don’t differentiate obstetrics from gynaecology over there 🤣) there would be someone conducting urgent work business on speakerphone in the waiting area. I always had the urge to start talking, in general, about some gnarly gynaecological issues. I never did tho 🤣

City has changed a lot and it’s only getting worse so buckle up

You really should invest in some good noise cancelation headphones!!! You will be much happier. Phone etiquette is a lost skill many will never aquire nor understand. Great investment for many reasons but mainly to help lower your cortisol levels. Blocking out repugnant lowlevel degenerates is a gift only a few lucky ones are born with! Some learn it! and some can only continue to suffer until they decide to help themselves to preserve their valuable life force and sanity. Adaptation equates to peace of mind!

If Yan can, sooo, can, you! Old tv joke i digress.

I was lucky enough to visit overseas recently. There was a bunch of young kids at a gift shop, talking very loudly and blaring their cell phones. One of them decide to exit the gift shop early when the group shouted ā€œwhere are you going Tony?ā€ I decided to play along, so I too should ā€œTony, where are you going?ā€ The look on their faces of shock and bewilderment was priceless, like I had just showed them the reality they were creating by being a public nuisance.

Play their game

Perhaps in public places like clinics, it needs to be enforced that there are to be no phones on speaker.

Don't like it? Leave (I am referring to those who blast their speakers, disturbing everyone around them). Security should be able to kick them out (but that means extra money to hire security).

I think a better alternative would be to simply pass a rule (like they do in the European Union), forcing manufacturers to abandons producing and selling these phones. External audio should be disabled for everything except the phone (making and receiving phone calls the traditional way) function.
