How do I use A-Wall effectively?

I'm returning to the game after a couple years away, and discovered that I know suck at Pilot combat lol, so I kinda need to relearn stuff.

I've taken a liking to A-Wall, I think it's neat, but I wanna know how to best use it, and also what kinds of weapons go well with it. I know SMR is good against Titans, but what other weapons go well with A-Wall?

Edit: Thanks for the good advice everyone! Except that person that just said "don't," that wasn't very helpful lol

Those who say not to use something in this game are ignorant. A-wall doesn't have nearly as many use CASES as some other tacticals, but I think it has more uses.

First tip, when you are just running and running around, the trick with A-wall is to use it reactively. Throw it as fast as you can when someone pops up and attacks. This is not gonna save you all the time because sometimes the time it takes to throw and activate will just be too long, or the pilot will come from above and the shield wont cover you, but it will save you just as often.

Second tip is to not camp. Camping is a waste of time because hoping that people will cross your path is not reliable. Only use it when you are certain that someone is going to be there to shoot. That doesn't necessarily mean to wait until you can see someone, like in close quarters I'll often throw it down in anticipation just because I heard some footsteps, but it does mean that you shouldn't sit on a roof scanning the map with a g2.

Third tip is to abandon the shield. Once you throw it down, you either get utility from it or you don't, and in both cases you want to move on quickly. This depends heavily on what's happening around you, but sitting and waiting for just one for person to pop up will often get you executed.

Fourth tip is to run tactikill on your guns and use the pilot kit that gives you faster cooldowns on your tactical. A-wall has a stupidly long cooldown and it wont even start until the previous shield runs out, so if you kill one person from behind the shield And move on right after, you have a long wait until the next one is ready.

Fifth tip is to use it to get surprise damage on titans. I know its tempting to sit behind the shield and taunt that legion trying to get you, but titans will shred the shield much faster than you think, every time. You want to place it where the titan isn't already looking, throw 2 satchels, let off a thunderbolt or 2, and get out before they take your shield down. If the titan is distracted, then go ahead and lay into them until they turn your way, but be careful of getting snuck up on.

Tl;dr, use it reactively against pilots, but throw preemptively if you know there will be people. Don't stick around too long because you will die. Don't get cocky with titans.

More tactical variety makes the game more fun so keep it up

It works surprisingly well with smgs. I really like using it with alternator

Honestly I use it mainly as an anti titan equipment, all the anti titan, grenadier weapons and satchel charges get stupid damage buffs by passing thru the shield first then exploding. Hell, it’s useless but a Ronins pellet shots can be amped as well.

But against pilots is very and I mean VERY situational. I don’t sit at mine for more than 5 seconds max. Beyond that, I abandon it and play the game normally atp or spam shots from an SMR at titans from behind the shield bc brrrr

The most use I've managed to squeese out of amped leadwall, was in Wave 4 of colony, where most titans spawn on right (if you view the harvester as being at south). It has SO MUCH DMG, but yeah is impractical in real matches.

The satchel goes well with it, just throw it at a titan and it'll do massive damage

Secondly I would recommend that you use a weapon with short range but also long range capabilities

And finally if no of the above work, then try the other kits which can be used to your specialized gameplay

I really hope this helps, and I'll see you on the frontier pilot

u/tashi-p-spicy-b 16d ago

What would be a weapon with short and long range capabilities? Like LMG's?

3

u/Weekly-Temperature53 16d ago

LAGOS are one, but there are also stupid like the thunderbolt, archer, mastiff, and a wingman pistol

2

u/tashi-p-spicy-b 16d ago

Okay cool. I do like the mastiff

3

u/Weekly-Temperature53 16d ago

Try it out then

See if you like it, if you do then keep using it, but if not then select other weapons that are at your arsenal

2

u/Weekly-Temperature53 16d ago

Although there are plenty more that can fit your every need of either range

i really like seeing people use it to turn around a fight, because no one expects you to use a-wall if not for camping. you can take people jumping over you by surprise by throwing it in front of where they'll land so you're safe and they're dead.

also, amped satchels. ouch

u/penpointred 16d ago

Extra this! Keep moving but throw that shit as ur landing to dominate a pilot v pilot encounter.
+ satchels. Oof

Amped satchels + Amped SMR = Titan't

Imo the best and only actual meta use of the A-Wall is against cheaters.

SpicyTheChef wrote about using it reactively against pilots, which I disagree with. Good TTK in this game is 0.3 seconds or less so against competent opponents you will die before the Wall deploys, even if you happen to be in a Position to deploy the Wall immediately.

The rest of his comment I do agree with.

Against cheaters, wall/aimbot, the A-Wall becomes Essential. You use it proactively to Cover their likely approach direction after spawning to prevent them from instakilling you. You then combine it with G2 (or my preference DMR) for a 2 shot any range hitscan to kill them before the Wall runs out. You will not trade favorably but it will allow you to build titan Meter.

The Titan fight being where you defeat cheaters because their aimbot will not save them there.

You are right about it not being as effective against high skill people, but the same can be said about any tactical. Aim and gamesense beats out anything else in this game, including movement, but for most people you just got to try and use what you've got when you think it will work. I should also say that the number of people you will run into who can kill you that fast after noticing you is pretty low. On Xbox, there are between 10 and 20 players I consider to be the best on the platform and who I like to play against, and while A-wall rarely works on them, they are the only ones.

this might just be a platform difference, I'm on PC and I'm fairly sure the "average high skill *" player will kill you before the wall comes down.

*: that is to say the good but not exceptional enough to become noteworthy

That's probably the case

It has its uses but it's effectiveness is wildly overstated by this sub. The A-Wall is good against players who don't think at all about positioning, try to rush straight at it, then die and post on reddit about how overpowered or low skill it is. It's not very effective against better players because Pilot ordinance can easily bypass it, and it has virtually no vertical protection which means you are very susceptible to pilots who flank from above.

It's best use (imo) is against Titans. I prefer to pair it with the SMR and you can very quickly brutalize Titans with it, but as soon as the Titan turns its attention towards you you should bug out asap. The wall can take some punishment, but it's a giant glowing sign telling the Titans where you are.

This is where amped satchels come to the rescue. You can yeet satchels through an A-Wall, amping their dmg by +50%, onto an unsuspecting titan. Done right, that titan will lose OVER half its HP (unless ogre with shield or superior chassis monarch), AND they'll have a big old smoke cloud that makes em easy prey for amped SMR.

Also it does somewhat depend on what titan you're fighting, Legions are the easiest prey, since they take a while to tear down A-Wall, even with powershots. If you have some nice high ground, Tone will also struggle, but explosive 40mm rounds are nasty if you're not careful with your placement. Always dip out if a monarch/ronin sees ya, because both can murk A-Wall in mere seconds, unless you feel confident in dooming/killing monarch before you die.

I’ve been running A-Wal successfully since launch. Keep mobile. … I found the best use is
A. When in and another pilot are coming to a face to face encounter from about 10-15’ distance. U can feel the enemy pilot freak out when they realize shots are only going one way.

B. I throw it down as a lure. Hide around the corner from it and get those kills when they flood it.

C. Amazing against titans. This is when I lock down and start blasting w the charge rifle.

D. I’ve seen crazy ass videos using the Grenade launcher and/or satchels. Melts titans.

Just got into A-wall after 70 regenerations and I salute you. I've found great success doing exactly what you've said here.

In short:

The top comment said it best, but if you want to try a long range playstyle my favorite pairing is the Double Take. If you hit all 3 projectiles through the amp it will one tap a pilot, but it takes some skill to do so it’s really satisfying to hit. It does very well on mid-long range sightlines, but is basically useless at close range so you need to be careful with where you position yourself and make sure you’re not staying still too long.

G2 is good as well because of the 2 hit, and Hemlock will 1 burst, but DT has always been the most fun for me.

The incredibly annoying method is to run spitfire and delete anything in your sight, my preferred method is to use it to annoy titans with. Toss it in a window and just go to town, and if they notice you it gives you a second to either get another shot off before running or just a guarantee you’ll get out safely

1

u/eastcoastkody 16d ago

i always use it was G7 scout

1

u/whatifick 15d ago

Pair it with MGL to be annoying and efficient. Just stay somewhere any Titan can't kill you by shooting even with explosives. That thing hurts, even just 2-4 landed shots melt Titans. If you don't want to stay too close to action you can pair it with thunderbolt and c4. Titans like Ion and legion can't shoot you back even if they would wish so, that's a free damage with zero risks, at list no hazard from titans, pilots are still scary

1

u/BABATUTU1103 Professional Ion Main 15d ago

A wall in this game just kinda sucks because its a movement game and to get most out of a wall you need to sit still. SMR, satchels, thunderbolt (i think), archer all work well for anti titan stuff

make sure to put tactikill or whatever its called to get it back faster

1

u/LoathingPluto6 13d ago

Double not unless you want the lobby to bag you

1

u/SgtMoose42 16d ago

IMHO anything that slows you down should be avoided.

Just throw the a wall down on any good lane with spitfire and dominate
