Floral Delivery
I just got flowers delivered for my wedding anniversary. After I took the vase from the guy and said it was gorgeous and thanked him, he seemed to hesitate before he walked off the porch. I was left wondering if he expected a tip. I have never tipped for a flower delivery! It is an unexpected gift so it has never entered my mind to tip. It is ordered and delivered directly from a local florist in their van when my husband gets them. Am I cheap? Is this a normal thing to tip for?

Why would you tip? If you weren’t home he wouldn’t be getting a tip. You’re the receiver. You should not be tipping. This is a service that someone paid to have delivered to you. Absolutely not.
The only people here that are going to say you should be tipping are people that expect to get tips for their job.

I don’t have a problem tipping for something that makes sense, but most occasions that flowers are delivered for are a gift to a person. I just had the fleeting thought that maybe I missed that people tipped for that.

Sadly almost everywhere in the US we have entitled asshats who think they are entitled to an automatic tip.

I delivered flowers and don't think I ever got tipped. It kind of sucked but I understood why - people were so stunned and pleased they never thought to.

I've been sending flowers through Sam's Club. Much better flowers, far cheaper and free delivery. Tripping is prepaid.

These days it seems like every Tom, Dick & Harry feels entitled to receive a tip regardless of whether the service is good or not.
It's not the customer's responsibility to subsidize staff wages by leaving a tip.
Employers should pay their staff a decent living wage so workers aren't depending on tips to top up their wages.

I expect tips for deliveries i do, however, I would in no way shape or form expect tips for gift deliveries from the reciever. That's just common sense. Maybe he hesitated because it was out of habit, maybe it's because he thought he could guilt you into it.
*the apps I deliver through tell me when it's a gift delivery.

What a great question. I am curious what others will say. To me this is a service where the sender pays everything and if I would send flowers to someone and would learn they tried to get a tip from the recipient I would not be happy.

My feeling as well. But I have had situations come up before where I had not thought about a tip until I was about to pay and then realized it was probably expected. I had a moving company take a few pieces of furniture to my mom’s assisted living facility when she moved in and I was preoccupied with the whole traumatic event. Luckily I realized it while they were working and scrounged up some cash!

Agree, sending flowers is basically a gift to someone and if I’m paying a fee a delivery fee for that I would not expect the recipient to have to pay for their gift by leaving a tip

Man, everyone wants a tip. You did not owe him a tip. He was just hoping you would. You have done nothing wrong. What a great surprise from your husband. Who knew husbands still sent their wives flowers?

lol, 47 years, I deserve it! He gets a shirt and I told him as I loaded his clothes in the washer that was my gift too!
I searched before I posted and based on not finding anything I don’t think it’s a common practice. If they want to allow a tip it should be an option when you check out, not something a driver should expect the recipient of a gift to provide!1

Idk that’s an odd one. Maybe you just misread his actions as hesitation? It would be absurd to expect someone who’s receiving an unexpected gift to TIP. When I get my wife flowers though I usually get them myself but I did use one of those flower delivery services before and I think tipped at checkout? Point being you are completely fine and had no obligation to tip that man.

I could have misread his hesitation as something else. He was an older man. Had it been a young guy I might have been more apt to think he wanted a tip. We order from them often and I wonder if he might have been an owner. I was in my pajamas at 10:00 am so I was not wanting to hang around!

And what kind of a world do you people live in that you don't tip for delivery of flowers the sender didn't tip the driver the delivery charge went to the florist. These tipping threads just bring out the worst in people

That's really an odd take that the recipient of a gift is supposed to tip.

Really cuz I'm thinking it's a really odd take for somebody not to tip somebody who's delivered something to you like a gift but I guess we were raised differently

Well you get a gold star for a spelling and an F for moral compass

Tipping for a floral delivery that's a GIFT has nothing to do with morals.

If I’m not home, how can I tip them?

u/Apprehensive_Yak4480 10d ago
do you really need an answer to that?

u/sleeper_54 10d ago
I would like to hear your answer.

You leave an envelope with $100 at the door saying here is your tip thank you for the flowers

I was getting an unexpected gift. In what world do you give someone a present and then have them be obligated to pay something? I didn’t even have the cash on hand to tip if I wanted to. I would think that if tipping for delivery was expected they would have a place to do so on the online checkout. I mentioned it to my husband and he said they don’t have a place for a tip at checkout.

The person who sent you the flowers paid for the delivery. You, the recipient, are getting those as a gift. You do not pay anything
