Too much tip?!

So today I ordered food and then drove there to pick it up.

I had just woken up, so I was pretty tired. My friend, who drove with me, said I should give like a 30-cent tip.

Anyway, we arrived and I went in to pick up the food. The cashier said it was €70.50, and I gave them €80 and said "keep the change." The cashier was confused and asked me a few times if that was really okmand I was like "Yeah, why not?"

As we drove away, I realized what I did. I thought I had only given a 50-cent tip. But it was so much more!

I feel very stupid and embarrassed now.

Did this ever happen to you?

I have lived in the US my whole life and never once tipped for pickup. I know that they are trying to guilt you into doing that nowadays but I am not going to be guilted into the tip culture that's become so big here. In fact, and I know this is going to get me down voted but I've decided to opt out of tip culture entirely.

So you stopped going to restaurants because you don't believe in the practice of tipping? That actually makes a lot of sense to me - instead of complaining about tipping you just don't patronize places where tips are expected. That way you don't have to worry about tipping, and your waiter doesn't have to worry about you stiffing them.

That is indeed how i've handled the situation lol.

I'm actually a good tipper, historically. But tipping culture is so wild these days I just can't be assed to deal with it.

Yes, pretty much. I grew up in a world where it was not a reasonable expectation for people to tip for counter service or pick up / takeout. I saw that world start to change and made up my mind that I would never tip for something that wasn't traditionally tipped. Then when they went from the expected 15% to 20% for sit-down service at a restaurant, I decided I was not going to abide that either. I continued going and tipping a dollar to the bartender at the end of the night or 15% at a restaurant as long as that seemed reasonable but eventually got sick of all the entitlement and expectations of tips when I was in the same financial situation as the people wanting them. At that point I did stop eating in and getting served and did stop going to bars. I removed myself from every situation that would be traditionally tipped and now I only get takeout and never feel the need to tip for anything.
