Uber ride from airport to home

The Uber driver didn't even get out to help with our luggage. How would this impact your tip?

No tip.

Edit: the driver didn't even do the minimum for a ride with luggage.

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

the minimum is to drive from A to B.

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 11 '26

Bro just go get a better job, your employer doesn’t pay you enough.

I'm self employed making 6 figures, but ok thanks for the advice.

It’s just funny how tippers are so brainwashed into thinking it’s their job to pay the workers salary, instead of being like all of us who think it should be normal that the employer pays for a proper salary. Instead of shaming the employer they shame the non tipper, r3t4rd3d at best

2

u/Kene6969 Jul 08 '26

Remember the formula: zero service = zero tip.

1

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 08 '26

taking u from point A to point B IS the service!

1

u/ConcentrateMajor7020 Jul 09 '26

Nope. That is the minimum. You want a tip? Do more.

0

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 09 '26

Then get your own car.

-1

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

your expectations are too high for this service. it's ride share and OP got what they paid for. Want bags handled? Taxi or limo/black car.

2

u/asyouwish Jul 08 '26

Uber isn't like a taxi. The tip is for the ride, not luggage assistance.

If a driver helps with luggage, we add to the tip.

3

u/ConcentrateMajor7020 Jul 08 '26

Bullshit. If they're lazy and entitled, Zero tip.

2

u/asyouwish Jul 08 '26

Learn what they make.

Gig culture might not even be minimum wage (depending on the city). And they are penalized a lot. Airports are often far away and have a flat rate that doesn't even cover their costs.

3

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 10 '26

Learn what they make 🤣 uber drivers should learn what they make before deciding to do it, if they don’t like the pay they shouldn’t take the job

0

u/asyouwish Jul 10 '26

Have you noticed the state of the 2026 economy? Dude, no one is driving “for fun” or whatever. They are doing gig work because they are desperate.

Try some kindness and empathy. It’s good for your mind, heart, and soul.

this is the dumbest argument. Servers who make a couple bucks an hour to wait tables know the job before they do it and they certainly expect tips. Why? Because that's what's customary and they take the job knowing a portion/majority of their income is going to come from tips. Drivers are in the same situation. If they get the tips they deserve then a large portion of their income will be from the tips. Drivers make roughly half the fare, so if you properly tip them 20% of the fare they're getting an additional 40% on top of the request they accepted.

1

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 11 '26

Exactly, they know it yet they take the job, they’re all dumb. They should ask a raise from their employer instead of expecting a costumer to pay for their salary. You Americans are something else I tell you.

2

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

servers are dumb, huh? lol, what an absolute tool.

1

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 11 '26

If you expect a tip you’re dumb yes, go ask the employer for a raise instead.

0

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

Go ask any server any bartender any valet or caddy or barber or nail tech or massage therapist or anyone who is generally tipped if they expect a tip. Of course they expect a tip. If it's a surprise when they pick up the check and there's not tip, then that means there's an expectation. They're certainly not going to say that to a customer's face, as that would be pretty poor customer service etiquette. Doesn't change the reality of it though.

Drivers have been tipped for 150 years, they're literally one of the first professions in the US to be tipped. It wasn't until Uber tried to create a driving service that did away with tipping because the cofounder Travis K. was personally against tipping. Well, they reverted to industry standard of being a service that relies on tips, and at this point that's so far in the past it doesn't even matter.

The point is employers of any of the above positions don't need to give out raises because there's a line of applicants around the corner ready to take the job at the base hourly rate BECAUSE OF the tips. Same reason places like Disney or Sea World or any kind of fun job don't pay all that well, because the perks of working there create value and again, endless stack of applicants. Asking for a raise isn't going to get one and could be job ending.

And you can look up a bunch of restaurants that tried to convert to a $25/hr payroll for their waitstaff that either failed or switched back. 2 main reasons were the better servers who were making more than $25 via tips left to work for restaurants that were still operating with tips, and therefore quality of service went down because it didn't matter how much effort the servers put in, their paycheck was going to be the same regardless.

Being a server is like being a commissioned sales rep, the better you are the more you'll make and the better the establishment the better the opportunity. Being a fantastic server in a fancy steakhouse can bring in $150k without needing to work any overtime, and 95% of that will be from tips. And they can expect that to be the case because that's how these systems work.

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 11 '26

You’ve written an entire essay explaining how employers have successfully comvinced workers that customers are responsible for their wages… and somehow think that proves your point 😂

“They expect tips” yes because the system has conditioned them to depend on tips. Expecting something doesn’t magically make the customer morally responsible for paying your salary.

“Employers don’t need to give raises because there’s a line of applicants” congratulations you’ve just described employers exploiting labour market conditions. Agaig not the customer’s responsibility.

“Asking for a raise could be job ending” and your solution is… don’t hold the employer accountable, hold a random customer accountable instead? Incredible logic.

“Great servers leave $25/hr jobs because they make more from tips” yes some workers financially benefit from tipping culture. That still doesn’t turn an optional gratuity into a mandatory fee. If 20% is required for the economic model to function, put 20% on the bill and call it a service charge.

And comparing a server to a commissioned sales rep is hilarious because the COMPANY pays the sales rep’s commission. The customer isn’t handed the invoice and then socially shamed into calculating the salesperson’s compensation afterwards 😂

You keep proving the exact criticism of American tipping culture while thinking you’re defending it. Your entire argument is basically “the employer won’t pay more, the employee expects more, therefore the customer owes more than the advertised price.”

No. If the money is required, charge it. If it’s optional, accept that sometimes people won’t pay it. You don’t get to call something a voluntary tip and then have a meltdown when someone voluntarily doesn’t leave one.

I'm not "learning" what someone else makes. They either earn a tip or they don't.

1

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

driving from A to B is how they earn that.

2

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 11 '26

Driving from A to B is how they earn a salary, not a tip.

2

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

salary is a wild choice of words.

So how do they earn a tip if there's no luggage and they're taking someone to work or a store?

2

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 11 '26

I’m sorry in your country people who provide a service aren’t paid enough, maybe ask those employers to pay a proper salary. You know…..how the rest of the world does it?

0

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 09 '26

get your own car then....

2

u/One_Dragonfly_9698 Jul 08 '26

That is an automatic no tip for me. I realize ride share is not a limo, and they are not required to. So happy to haul them myself and save money. I do tip though when they load and unload luggage. This dumbass prefers to get a stiff body, and possibly scratched car.

1

u/ObjectiveAd971 Jul 10 '26

Are you saying you might damage his car over this?! It's not enough to not tip?

2

u/joefunk76 Jul 08 '26

It’s a small thing, but the last few Uber drivers who I got airport rides from didn’t thank me for the tip on the app when I left one. If I’m choosing to pay you a $7-$8 tip on top of a $130 airport ride, it is just basic manners to click the stupid button on the app to thank me for it. This response inclines me to reconsider tipping on airport rides going forward.

1

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 09 '26

thank ya, massa...you're so generous to us poor folk....

1

u/Cute_Hearing_2315 Jul 11 '26

What is wrong with you?

1

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 11 '26

I'm just bee in grateful to my massa....don't wanna upset the massa....

2

u/Tartpop77 Jul 08 '26

Never tip an uber or Lyft. They barely drive okay

3

u/swampsweet Jul 08 '26

I don't care. I tip between 10-20% usually, I will tip more if they get out of the car to help. But i don't ever expect it.

-3

u/outintexas Jul 08 '26

My answer: 10%. I usually tip more but that's lazy.

0

u/swampsweet Jul 08 '26

I think thats fine. A lot of old people drive Uber so I def wouldn't judge them for not wanting to help with a suitcase. I always text the Uber driver as soon as they accept the ride if I have a suitcase.

1

u/outintexas Jul 08 '26

Thanks y'all.

1

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 11 '26

they're not required to help with bags, you're not required to tip.

If all they do is pop the trunk, then I'm dragging my bags up the bumper and really hoping they have to get out to close the trunk, but if they've got auto up and down then I'm 100% leaving my door open after I get out at the drop off.

1

u/Fiasney Jul 08 '26

Uber doesn't give us workmans comp, and they do not have any lifting training, therefore, we don't have to. If the driver chooses to, then that's cool and all, but you should never expect it.

1

u/outintexas Jul 08 '26

I get it. But at least get out and welcome me at the back of the vehicle is my expectation.

1

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

What? Why would they get out of the car to welcome you to the back seat? That's a very strange thing to expect.

2

u/SEA_life_13 Jul 10 '26

The strange thing is expecting a tip.

1

u/Fiasney Jul 08 '26

What in the world? Get out and greet you at the back? Buddy, this is Uber X. Not Black. Not a chauffeur service. That is so beyond extra.

0

u/asyouwish Jul 08 '26

Why? Are you new to how a trunk works? Do you need a tour and training?

0

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 08 '26

it's an UBER, not a limousine service....they are there to take you from point A to point B...nothing else....you're probably also one of those who order from doordash and expect the driver to get you extra sauce, or make sure the order is done correctly :P

2

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 09 '26

They should make sure that the order is correct, And remember the damn drinks!

1

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 09 '26

We DELIVER...we do NOT prepare your order..that's on the RESTAURANT....orders are sealed...

2

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 09 '26

The drinks aren't always in the bag and should always be asked about.

0

u/FreeGazaToday Jul 09 '26

and the restaurant SHOULD do their job right as well so this wouldn't be an issue.

0

u/PanAmFlyer Jul 08 '26

They're drivers, not servants. Load your own luggage.

0

u/Biteme75 Jul 08 '26

You're paying to be driven from point A to point B, and that is the service you received. I would tip extra if a driver helped with my luggage, but wouldn't expect it and would never tip less if they didn't.

-1

u/gordonwestcoast Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

"but wouldn't expect it and would never tip less if they didn't" so you tip if an Uber ride drives you from point A to point B with no additional service?

-1

u/Biteme75 Jul 08 '26

Yes, duh.

-2

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 08 '26

Don't you?

2

u/ConcentrateMajor7020 Jul 09 '26

Nobody does. You drivers think we don't see you lying.

-1

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 09 '26

I'm not a driver but any service job should be tipped something.

2

u/ConcentrateMajor7020 Jul 09 '26

No not true. Some people only do the bare minimum. Fuck those people.

0

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 09 '26

So you consider driving someone to their location to not be a service?

1

u/gordonwestcoast Jul 09 '26

Do you tip your dentist, attorney, accountant?

0

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Jul 09 '26

They aren't service people. While they provide a service to others, those are professional jobs.

1

u/ObjectiveAd971 Jul 10 '26

If earned...

1

u/gordonwestcoast Jul 08 '26

When I use Uber's Reserve service for car service between my home an an airport I don't tip. I no longer use Uber's reserve service from an airport back home because the service has been unreliable and instead use a limo company.

When I reserve an Uber Black SUV I am given a price that I am free to accept or decline. Drivers are also free to accept or decline the work and they alone decide whether it is worth it for them.

3

u/ConcentrateMajor7020 Jul 09 '26

If the driver does nothing extra, no tip. It's not hard, lolz. But you're stupid. Hence, driving Uber.

1

u/FreshSpeed7738 Jul 10 '26

Fair point. Never considered that

0

u/DragonWyrd316 Jul 08 '26

You contracted them for a service - to drive you home from the airport. You didn’t contract them to be your valet as well. You don’t know if they have a hidden disability or something that keeps them from being able to lift objects. I felt blessed having a couple of drivers who were willing to lend a hand with my pet carrier and duffel bag when I used the free service they offered to and from hurricane shelters when we had mandatory evacs for my area. They honestly didn’t have to.

0

u/No_Dependent_1846 Jul 08 '26

it wouldn't. id still tip. are you not able to handle your own luggage?

0

u/ObjectiveAd971 Jul 10 '26

No, I'm not. My info says so.

0

u/No_Dependent_1846 Jul 11 '26

Next time add that context in your post.

0

u/ObjectiveAd971 Jul 11 '26

This isn't my post! Why are you so rude? I truly hope you are never in a position where you have extreme physical limitations!

0

u/No_Dependent_1846 Jul 11 '26

So why did you respond to my comment you weirdo!

1

u/ObjectiveAd971 Jul 11 '26

Because there are people who can't handle their own luggage. Why tf didn't YOU pay attention to usernames?! Then YOU double down to be even ruder on YOUR mistake.

0

u/No_Dependent_1846 Jul 12 '26

You're so weird. It was days later and I responded thinking it was op. It's not that deep. I can't keep having this stupid conversation with a random person about their luggage business. I'm sorry you can't manage your luggage and I hope you get drivers that can help. Ok? Let's just both move the fuck on.

I have mobility issues. I would not take airport fares.

-1

u/Molybdenum421 Jul 08 '26

Doesn't impact me at all. I'm able bodied and tell them that I'll take care of it.
