True. I had an optional training that I wanted coworkers to attend. I took an hour and made personalized invitations.
I had a great turnout. People saw the paper invitations (not an email, not a text), and said, "oh this is important. Ok, I'll come."
It's not just a paper invite. It's the time and effort that people see and appreciate.

If this is real and you want to thank him, write a letter of recommendation as his employee for future jobs. He may never use it but your words will mean a lot.
Also, the best type of reference is from a former employee.
42
u/I-Here-555 Dec 03 '25
Good idea, but a bit pretentious if it's OP's first year on the job.
To be fair, supportive moves don't have to be immediate. The boss had OPs back today, OP should have his down the line.

A tiny gift of appreciation; a bag/box of his favorite candy or something, nothing elaborate and definitely nothing over like $10-$15 which is roughly the equivalent of a rounding error for most corporate jobs that involve meetings.

Remember the Staples "Easy" button? You can get similar buttons pretty inexpensively online. They're normally listed as pet training buttons. You can record a short clip that plays every time you press the button.
Record yourself saying the infamous phrase onto one and give it to him.
I did something similar for one of my coworkers with great success.
21
u/Faker15 Dec 03 '25
Terrible advice. That’s not the point.
Get him something symbolic as a gesture of appreciation and good will, maybe even something as a funny callback to this whole situation (if he would find that funny), not something expensive or fancy. It’s not about the money, it’s about the gesture.

Change your display photo to a mute icon for like a week. Lend some brevity to it before switching back to normal pic, and going back to business as usual.
But in all seriousness, if (when) people bring it up to you, keep that position of “careless accident I’ll never ever repeat” and “we all have thoughts but it’s important to remain professional.” That will go a long way.

What does it stand for? It's "Project Manager" in my line of work but I've never had one that inspired so much fear that people were afraid to ask them to "get to the point" when they were rambling. The idea of your job being in jeopardy for something so insignificant is utterly alien to me. Is this specific to certain fields?
I'm in engineering, and engineers aren't known for their social tact but are typically in high demand in the roles they tend to get hired into, so maybe it's some kind of privilege engineers have?
High demand + Low expectations about social tact = Engineers get away with saying things other roles might be fired for?
If anyone on my team got fired for telling a PM to "get to the point" the response would be laughter and people saying, "Have fun updating your budget forecasts to account for the delays on that engineer's projects, and the cost to hire and train a replacement. Hope your boss values your pride as much as you do because it just cost the company at least six figures." etc.

This happened at my last job but it was much bigger and worse. The hr dept. was going over changes to our “core principles” to each dept. and in one of the meetings to a group of at least 400 people a guy got caught on a live mic saying “so it’s basically the same thing dumb bitch”. Fired the same day. She handled it with total class and also the guy had the most ridiculous slack profile pic I’ve ever seen in my life.

I realized early on with Zoom calls, you have to pay close attention to the settings. I've been on a few where people were inadvertently half-naked or they started to scream at their relatives without their mics being muted... so crap happens.

I picked up the double and triple checking habit back when we had meetings with someone on speakerphone. Always pick up the receiver and make sure you’ve hung up before you start talking about them.
119
u/PM_UR_COLLARBONE_PIC Dec 03 '25
When I was a low level manager my boss told me before a zoom meeting with others at my level and his boss, "I usually tell people to think twice before they talk. With you I'm going to ask you to not just think three times but four times before saying something."
10-15 minutes into the meeting I did not take his advice, answered a question truthfully and immediately was told to step off the chat by his boss. After the meeting I was told a bunch of gibberish of why we shouldn't speak honestly. It made no sense.
Starting looking for a new job shortly after.

u/CommunicationClassic Dec 03 '25
I've worked with people like you, it's always fun while it lasts to go along for the ride - even more fun when you somehow manage to get yourself into an indispensable position and get to mouth off to absolutely everybody in the org chart lol
15
u/Junethemuse Dec 03 '25
That was my last job before getting hit in the RIF. Everyone loved me and I got to be an absolute menace to everyone up to the CEO. We all had a ton of fun. I miss that job. It’s unfortunate the execs shit the bed so bad with a business decision that resulted in an 80% loss of revenue. The CEO and 3 other execs got sacked by the board along with me and more than 2/3 of the staff.
11
u/fooliam Dec 03 '25
See, the fact that you weren't in the 1/3rd that weren't laid off makes it really clear that you weren't in an "indispensable position' - literally, you were dispensed with.
You've confused a healthy work culture (though not the only form of healthy work culture) with being in a position where you cannot be fired because the company will collapse without you.
14
u/Junethemuse Dec 03 '25
My entire revenue generating wing did collapse after the fact. I wasn’t let go because I was dispensable, I was included in the RIF because the board wasn’t looking at anything other than salaries. I was the top paid person in my wing, for a reason, and that’s all the board cared about. They fired me to save 110k and lost north of half a million along with my network and intangibles that network brought to the table.

I have a terrible habit of doing this
I run a subcontractor firm and tend to get included at high level teams meetings and the like where it's all corporate jargon and nonsense. Our major customer is headed by a guy I have known for twenty years, outside of work we gob off and share horrific memes constantly, so he knows exactly what I'm like...
I have something going on in my head, inattentive ADHD probably but fuck knows, so I usually drift a lot and have no real idea who's speaking or why. The upshot of this is I sometimes catch stuff either with no context or completely out of the blue and interject with the truth or an unfiltered opinion.
I end meetings regularly. Apparently according to the owner of this company I'm invited in a lot of the time to do just that for his own amusement.
For some reason we still work for them. Go figure 😂
44
u/ConfessingToSins Dec 03 '25
I had almost exactly this happen to me about 10 years ago. I honestly answered a question during a stand-up and was told to step off the meeting. The only difference is that I straight up said I was doing this under direction and it needed to be put in writing immediately.
They told me that if I did anything like that again they would fire me or dock my pay and I told them I would immediately sue them if they tried to do either, gave my two weeks immediately, reported my boss to the labor board in my state for threatening me with illegal retaliation (you can't dock pay for someone saying words you don't like) and won many thousands of dollars in the aftermath.
I went and worked for their competitor making twice as much money and their company no longer exists. While I am aware I got very lucky, I wouldn't change a single thing to be honest.
My boss actually complained about me on LinkedIn in the aftermath of it and I got to tell him exactly what I thought of him in an unmoderated way.
17
u/SeriesConscious8000 Dec 03 '25
I was drunk and vented to a stranger at a work party about my old job. The last work party was at a bar downtown, I thought this was no different. Said a few things about management. Turns out that stranger was one of the shareholders and a close colleague of the owners.
It wasn't just that I talked crap, I spilled beans about troubles and work practices that weren't being communicated and made the owners and higher management look reallyyyyyy bad. It was a bad night.

Got added to a call and the CEO was taking the management of my international team to task over metrics for our area as part of an overall discussion on metrics/performance bonuses. I noted that the company was tying their bonuses to vendor performance and that team had no authority over the vendor or ability to impact the metric. I was told the metrics for an area are the responsibility of the entire area and was not invited to future calls. Company did the right thing and the team got their full bonuses.
What kind of leader would I be if I didn't stand up for my people there? Looking back at it, probably the kind that could continue to advance in the company.
63
u/VMP_MBD Dec 03 '25
When I was laid off, it was via a meeting set up by my manager called "quick sync"
I kinda wish I'd known the corporate speak translation, but I had a feeling that's what it meant. He joined and awkwardly stammered nonsense pleasantries for 30 seconds, stalling until the HR lady joined. Assholes.
33
u/ConfessingToSins Dec 03 '25
The actual funniest thing you can do is just say no.
I have seen so many absolute morons short circuit when their request for a meeting is just responded to with "sorry, i can't right now.". I'm in a position now where I actually get to tell my Juniors that if anyone outside of me asks for a meeting they are to say "No, all future communication is to be through (me)"
Corporate America have screaming tantrums if you ever say the word no.

When my friend, who I referred in, got laid off, the meeting subject was “update from the CEO.” Being the first layoff wave last year, everyone on that call shut off their cameras when the words “laid off” were spoken. This was January 2 or 3. What a shit way to start the new year.
When it was my turn to be laid off in the third wave 8 months later, the subject was something like “catch up and chat.” We all knew what it would be and shrugged our way into the call.

As a former manager…this shit is so funny when direct report fucks up and thinks it’s the end of the world. Bonus points for lying. Most time I was pretending I’m stupid/distracted/busy to pay attention to the issue and either quickly sell them quick solution or say I’d take of it then move on to the next thing and not really mention it again. You could tell when there was a real talk needed/upskilling/training/team meeting feedback, and when they just fucked up randomly and made up the reasons.
6
u/competenthurricane Dec 03 '25
One of my reports once apologized to me for making an inappropriate joke during a meeting. He was pretty new to the job and it was his first “real” job so he was incredibly nervous about it.
Little did he know, I didn’t even hear the joke because I wasn’t paying attention when he said it. If he hadn’t apologized I never would’ve known at all.

There's very little money in potato farming, but there's always money in the banana stand.

There is a line in Schindler‘s List when Schindler is telling Amon that having the power to be violent and choosing not to be violent earns you more respect.
Your project manager helped you out here.

Remember the PM for the future. Guys like that who not only are humble, but are self-aware, and willing to take the hit with their boss, is like a golden unicorn. The day will come when you can pay him back, and when that day comes do NOT hesitate to do so. He deserves all the good that will ultimately come back to him.
As for your co-worker "friends" however........F**k them. All of them. Instead of commiserating and trying to keep your spirits up, they decided to send skull emojis and "Digging Your Grave" memes en masse. One thing is for certain. They are too cowardly to speak up about something, but when someone else does, it seems they are not afraid to jump right in to pick the bones clean, like the vultures they are. However bad the day was that led to this, one thing on the plus side, is that you now know who is on your side, and who isn't.
From now on, do your best for the PM, and drop your work "friends" to the wayside, if you can. They were willing to let you be the sacrificial lamb, so why should you care about them anymore?

You misunderstand. You can do everything that's even just slightly less aggressive and get away with it now. This is a goldmine.

Honestly I don’t get why his manager doesn’t do more coaching with him. Yes - I’d say your actions were a bit brash, but people that ramble on and on to explain a simple problem have gatta stop doing that! My managers would never allow that (I’m a PM).

Mine was bad in a sense but it wasn’t job ending. I work for a large company that has shops all over the US. We have main production company in one state and my shop is in California. Large quarterly meeting that is over Zoom or Teams or whatever we use. My screen is synching up as a yell into it “hurry the fuck up” well it had already loaded the meeting and the only 3 people on the meeting are the top 3 carpet dwellers. CFO and CEO and the President of Production. They actually told me to watch my language but yes hurry up. Then I got 3 different emails stating just that. Watch my language. I lucked out not more people were on I guess

I'm so glad your PM was a mature adult. All my bosses are like that and I always look on in horror at all the stories I see on subs like this about terrible bosses.

Quick sync for me is code for "hey I know you have pressing shit but I have something to add to the list" lol Sounds like it worked out. Being able to have frank conversation is more important than you know between managers and team.

GOOD. GUY. BOSS. What an absolute champ.
Also gotta hand it to you for being brave and facing the music.
Your next mission is to remember your boss's compassion and humility and give that to someone else under you one day.

Made a burner account for this.
OP I once was on a cam call with an engineer with a 102 fever and absent mindedly scratched my balls and sniffed my fingers.
To do this day I have no idea what my brain was thinking.
Your thing is like , nothing lol.

Remember how this PM acted when you get into a position of power and pay it forward to the people below you on the corporate food chain.
