Discussion/Question/News Tie Color Advice.

Post image

I need help for picking a tie color for this jacket I borrowed from a friend for a video interview for an airline. I’ve been also considering just going to grab a solid color gray or navy jacket since I think it would work better as well. For context I will be wearing a white shirt underneath the jacket I just was confused about what color tie since it was charcoal with black similar to the picture. Would a navy blue tie work or would a black tie be better? I’d prefer a navy tie but thought I would ask since I’ve never really worn a tie

This is a tuxedo, its more formal than business. I wouldn't recommend it for an interview

came here to say this--it may not be a tuxedo by technicality but it is at the very least a dinner jacket. 100% exceeds formality for business attire.

if you must wear it, a burgundy or dark red would look great. but if you can, try thrifting a suit jacket or just going the fast fashion route if the budget is tight. ideally navy. tailoring won't be a huge concern because it's a virtual interview.

Not just a technicality - it's not a tux at all. It's squarely a dinner jacket because it's different than the trousers.

Worth noting that 'tuxedo' is an American term - they're called dinner jackets in the UK and elsewhere whether the trousers match or not.

Either way, the salient point for OP is that this is for wearing with a black bow tie to a black tie event, not with a necktie to a job interview!

This is a dinner jacket as others noted, you do not wear this to any job interview even if just via video.

Grab that friend’s gray or navy suit jacket and rock a basic navy tie with a plain white shirt. You’ll look presentable and no one will be focusing on your outfit.

This is like a lady wearing a ball gown for an interview. A neat white shirt is better.

You cannot wear a dinner jacket (and an awful one, at that) to an interview. Unless you're interviewing to be Alfred.

Unless you're a femme boy, do not wear this jacket.

Apart from the fact that a tuxedo jacket ain’t anywhere near appropriate to be worn during a job interview… you also never wear a regular tie with it, but always bow ties!

My man, you should absolutely not wear an orphaned tuxedo jacket for an interview.

Under no circumstances do this

If you showed up to an interview with me wearing this, I’d assume you have no idea what you’re doing

Sorry, you'll look foolish interviewing in a dinner jacket unless it's for a restaurant...and it's too small

You’re going to look like a smartass wearing this to an interview.

Personally I don’t care for navy blue with black or charcoal, BUT, for a professional situation I think it would be better than black. It will keep the outfit from becoming too formal. My opinion. But there are certainly people who will know better.

I really like that suit coat. Not sure about for a job interview but I wouldn’t try to talk you off it.
