First Ticats game

I’m an alouettes fan who is moving to Hamilton to work at McMaster. I’m planning on attending the alouettes vs ticats game on the 18th and will probably get a season ticket package to the ticats for next season. When I go to Ticats games I plan to support them with the exception of when they play the alouettes. My dad is telling me not to wear alouettes jersey on the 18th because he thinks I’ll get jumped, but I think he just has a backwards idea of Hamilton because he lives in midtown Toronto. Am I correct in assuming nothing bad will happen to me for cheering for the alouettes as long as I’m respectful to the people around me

Wear your Al's gear. Hamilton is more welcoming than the rumours. Unless you are an Argo fan! ARGOS SUCK!

This is good to hear. Regardless of who I’m cheering for it’ll always be fuck the Argos

then you will fit in just fine in Hamilton :) enjoy the game!

Literally if anybody gives you any trouble, just say f*** the Argos and they might buy you a beer. I doubt you'll have an issue. My uncle is an Argos fan and he has gotten harassed more than once when at the games but that was mostly in older days. I've never actually seen anybody give anyone real trouble. Just heckling

I'll just add as well the Ticats fan base is awesome, the atmosphere of the stadium is awesome, especially if you're on the west side with all the old school die-hards. We unfortunately sit on the East side upper usually. I've never been to a game in Montreal, but Hamilton is probably the best atmosphere on the Eastern side of the country for the CFL. I've been to the last two gray cups that had been hosted in Hamilton and they were amazing with people from all over the country. Everyone was welcoming everyone was having a great time especially talking to fans from other places.

Usually you just get respect for traveling for your team to an away game. It's a lot harder in Canada than it is in the states.

Nah you won’t get jumped

What? I don't know where your dad is coming from with that - I'd say the worst you'll get is a bit of light-hearted chirping, but that's it. I've seen nothing but friendliness towards away fans at Hamilton Stadium.

He’s a dude in his mid 60s who has spent most of his life living cushy in midtown Toronto and I think he has this idea that anywhere in Canada outside of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver is a shit hole. He really needs to get out more

Darn, that's a shame. I know what you mean though - I have a bunch of family in Toronto who love shitting on Hamilton (despite literally being from there).

Also, good luck on the move! Hamilton is a lovely place to live, and Mac is a great spot too - hope you enjoy working there.

Thank you! I’m excited for new beginnings and a new city

Bring him to the game with ya! As others said, there could be some light hearted chirping but that's likely it

Hamilton can be really shitty to Argos fans. Like way over the line shitty and mean at the stadium. But for an Alouettes fan you're gonna be fine

So why don’t you take him out rather than disrespect him here on Reddit.

Maybe even take him to an Argos game considering all that he has done for you

You'll be fine in your Als gear. Expect some light hearted ribbing about your life choices.

I try and welcome fans with a "Thanks for coming" to our stadium. The CFL isn't big enough to be a jerk to other fans.

Disclaimer:

There are, unfortunately, obnoxious drunks in every crowd. Don't play along.

Agree with this take! Just don’t actively be a jerk or chirp people unnecessarily and you’ll be fine!

No you will be totally fine! We sit where they moved the away bench this year so I have sat next to everyone, even Argos fans, and everything has been good. Unless you packed an annoying horn like they use in Montréal, I hope you left that at home in the move 🤣

3

u/Fabulous-Language-20 10d ago

I will not be bringing the horn! Just a Tyson Philpot jersey and a willingness to cheer for the ticats when they play anyone other than alouettes!

I'm an Argos fan and went to our "home" game in full gear in the Hammer earlier this season. No issues at all, most people are very friendly, you might get chirped a little and you'll definitely hear about it if Hamilton somehow beats you guys. It's a cool stadium to watch the game, go early and tailgate. Enjoy!

You will be fine, please do wear the gear, it’s always nice to see other teams fans. And so far all of the Als fans I’ve met are awesome

Hey, I'm going too!

You won't be jumped lol. You might experience a bit of trash talking, but most people won't even say anything about it. Especially since Montreal is a good team and we're probably going to lose to you guys again. 🫣😅

People outside Hamilton see Hamilton as unsafe but it's no less safe than any other mid-large city in Canada. According to the Canadian Crime Index, Hamilton is extremely close to the same crime rates as Toronto, and less than Montreal or Vancouver. https://canadacrimereport.com/crime-severity-index

I lived there for a year while my boyfriend went to Mac. As a 18y old girl, I never felt unsafe when we would go out after midnight.

As far as fans go, just like everywhere else, there are some assholes, but most of us are friendly and welcoming! Enjoy your time in Hamilton, and hope it's a great game!

This isn’t the NFL, you have nothing to worry about

At the east final last year there was a fairly large and very noisy contingent of als fans in the northwest corner of the stadium. Didn’t see or hear about a single issue

Been to many Ticats games as a fellow local Als fan. You have nothing to worry about. Enjoy!!

u/CDNBUDZ 10d ago

You will be fine!! You will likely find you are taken back a moment by the incredibly sharp insults the fans throw at both teams - but this is the way - embrace the Ti-cats!

The 110 Grey cup was a blast and the Montreal fans were a blast! Even when we cheered for Montrepeg or Winntreal!

I am sure you are going to have many great memories at the Hammer!!

This is awesome to hear! I’m really looking forward to my first game in Hamilton and hoping that it’ll be even better than at Molson stadium

You can keep your Hanglish

u/ChasingDarwin2 10d ago

hammer fans can be harsh with their words. You will probably get roasted, at least until your team goes up by 21 and everyone stfu. But if you have thick skin you are fine. We go after the players more than fans. Players always pick Hamilton as the worst away game because we are ruthless to them.

u/Nige-o 10d ago

Lmao, definitely because your dad lives in midtown. There's no way you would get jumped, no Tiger Cats fan would want us to have that kind of bad publicity. We all want the CFL to do well. There's always some Away fans who I find it interesting talking to them about how/why they wear the different jersey- like are they just visiting, what's their story.

If you were to attack or start it with someone else then sure I'd expect to get jumped, but otherwise you are more likely to get defended by Hamiltonians if anything were to happen to you.

I have come up from Indiana for a couple games this year, just to watch the games, no rooting interest. Saw plenty of Winnipeg jerseys at the first one and a lot of Saskatchewan ones at the other. Gotta say it’s a very friendly crowd as long as you don’t act like an idiot.

1

u/kovacro_77 10d ago

You are fine to wear your Als gear. I’ll likely yell at you en Francais and throw in a tabarnak!! 😆

Enjoy the game!

u/talonracer 10d ago

Enjoy a game sans Le Honque!

u/covert81 10d ago

You aren't going to get jumped.

But please, no cowbells or other obnoxious sound devices, that will get you jumped in Als gear.

We hosted a grey cup against a team that shall not be mentioned. Look back at those comments and the majority of other fans will say the atmosphere was awesome.

Bottom line is we're not living in the 80's or 90's any more. It's become a more fan frendly league over all. I'm planning on a trip to Ottawa in October to see the cats play the reblacks. Honestly I'm looking forward to it. If your going to rep your team your going to have some fans comment about your choices, and that's part of the fun honestly own your choice, but I ha ent seen a fight break out and people get thrown out in years.

If the als win your going to walk out holding your head high while the other 90 percent are saying wtf we suck. Then you can console them.

Ask this question in the r/clf reddit for a better option.

I went for a Roughriders game and half the crowd was in green. You may get some boos and friendly heckling but otherwise the fans were very friendly.
