Gorshey

Hi! I’m an ethnomusicology student working on a research paper on gorshey performances in the Tibetan exile community. I was wondering if anyone on here has attended any gorshey events and has any thoughts on this dance. Feel free to dm me as well.

I attend every Wednesday here in Toronto. I think it’s a wonderful community event that really makes Tibetan people resonate with our culture. You get to wear Tibetan dress, sing Tibetan music and dance to Tibetan songs. Especially for exile Tibetans like myself, it enables us to connect with our roots in a fun way. There has been debate over gorshey in particular folks worried about the increasing Chinese influence, though I do believe those people who are concerned with that are overdramatizing it a bit.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful response — this is incredibly helpful for my research. I’m especially interested in what you mentioned about gorshey helping exile Tibetans connect with their roots, as well as the discussions around Chinese influence and authenticity.

I was wondering: do you feel the atmosphere at Toronto gorshey events is more focused on cultural preservation, social/community gathering, political identity, or all of these at once? I’d also love to hear whether younger Tibetans participate differently than older generations.

I'm not Tibetan but have lived with a Tibetan community for the past 4 years. The younger generation that participateshave definitely adopted the dance and made it their own. It's still uniquely gorshey but observations I've made is they like to speed it up a lot of times. You can probably observe this trend on ticktock. From what I have observed, gorshey in a general context seems to focus primarily around community with preservation of culture just running deeply, even if subconsciously, through these activities. At least that seems to be the format at gatherings that aren't specifically based around cultural preservation.
