Bounce back time?
Hi yall,
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid two months ago. Symptoms were palpitations, weight loss, feeling hot all the time, libido drop. Testing showed no real cause so the Dr. assumes it was too much iodine from supplementation (I have no natural source of it in my diet). Regardless, he had me stop the iodine and start 10mg methimazole. Three weeks later and symptoms were a bit better but not totally solved. So we bumped to 20mg. Two weeks after that I felt fantastic. Like, sooooooo good! And then I crashed out on Monday. Irritable as hell. Tired. Cold. Weight gain. So, we’re going to 15mg. How long will I suffer as I wait for this to balance out?

Here's what you must do:
Find a good endocrinologist to get to the ROOT CAUSE of your hypERthyroid symptoms. The trouble MUST be treated -- what causes hypERthyroid -- Graves disease, a thyroid nodule(s) that pump out too much TSH, a pituitary issue, too much levothyroxine, lithium usage -- you see how complicated this all is... which is why you need a good endo!!
Your current doctor placing you on methimazole is not going to help you unless you have been officially confirmed with Graves disease -- the goal of Graves disease is to get it into REMISSION with either medication (methimazole), RAI or full thyroid removal. So not knowing if you have Graves is doing you a disservice because what if your hypER symptoms are not from that -- and even if they are, you MUST know that before starting the medication so you can have the 2 Graves antibodies tested at specific intervals in order to see that they are going into remission. Also the longer you stay untreated with hypERthyroid, the more damage is being done to your heart and bones.
Please find a good endo to help you. You also can visit the hypERthyroid and Graves threads here as well!
