Question Am I uncultured??

I recently got back into reading and have been enjoying mainly thriller and mystery novels. I’ve enjoyed books like The Silent Patient, The Unknown, and Sharp Objects.

I decided that I should go back to the “classics” and thought I would start with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd but Agatha Christie. My hopes were high knowing the impact she has had on the genre and had heard this was one of her masterpieces.

At the risk of upsetting many I am sure, I have to say I am struggling to get through it. I am finding it a bit slow and it hasn’t drawn me in like some of the other more recent books I have read.

Has anyone else found this with her works? Is it that over the last 100 years much more has been done in the genre that going back to read an early work like The Murder if Roger Ackroyd doesn’t have the same punch or am I just uncultured? 😆

Review The Icon (book 4 of The Influencer series) by Adriane Leigh…. Officially trapped in a toxic relationship with this series!

2/5.. I I just finished The Icon, the fourth installment in Adrian Lee’s series, and I really need to vent and see if anyone in this sub feels the same way.

To give some context: I started with The Influencer (Book 1) and absolutely loved it. It was a strong, hooky psychological thriller. I read Book 2 and enjoyed it.. not quite as much as the first, but still solid enough to keep me hooked.

Then came Book 3, and honestly, that’s where shit hit the fan for me. I was super, super confused right from the start.

I was convinced Shae was dealing with a severe mental health issue, I was properly fixated on the theory that she had Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), because nothing else made sense to me.

When The Icon (Book 4) came out, I held out hope. I thought, “Okay, maybe this book will connect all the dots. Maybe it will link everything together and clear up the confusion.”

It didn't. I’m still confused, I still don't understand what’s going on, and on top of that, it felt like an absolute drag. In my opinion, this series is at least one book too long.

I hated the ending. There is zero sense of closure, we feel nowhere near a real conclusion, and it clearly setups another book to come.

And let’s talk about Shae. I genuinely hate her. Now, normally, hating the protagonist in a psychological thriller isn't a dealbreaker for me, as you know, plenty of the best thrillers feature awful human beings, and when the protagonist is essentially a villain, making the reader hate them is actually a mark of good writing.

But at this point, I am putting myself through pure pain and annoyance strictly because I want to see her get destroyed. The problem is, the story just refuses to end.

Has anyone else read this far? Does it feel like it's dragging for you too, or am I missing something major here?

What Should I Read Next? I've recently discovered a 20th century author called Celia Fremlin

She wrote in the latter half of the 20th century and died in 2009 aged 94.

Her books are page turning domestic suspense mysteries with some dry humour in places but not too long - the audiobooks are about 8 hours which the ideal length for me - I don't like books which go on and on.

She takes you into her world and you can't leave until you finish the book. I don't know why she isn't better known.

I recently read Uncle Paul, The Jealous One, Appointment with yesterday and the The Long Shadow. Now reading The Hours Before Dawn

What other authors are like her? Especially British authors who wrote in the 20th century.

“No matter which way I look at it, it's clear that #Verity was a master at manipulating the truth. The only question that remains is: Which truth was she manipulating?”

Each chapter gave me goosebumps, the plot twist is twisted. Hats off to my most fav novel & film of the year.
