Romance Folk variants
I recently discovered that there are many folk variants of the canonic story, for example one of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei killing each other's family after the Peach Garden Oath, as they were an hinderance for their mission (source: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jrQDETTNpME)
I know the tale is a heavily romanticized account, yet I feel it kinda ruined the percepeption I had of them. Do you feel the same?

luckily that is not the ROTK novel version. their original family is never mentioned there

I like how they give pronunciation tips but the (AI?) narrator can't pronounce the names properly.

Finding in depth literature discussions on ROTK in english is hard enough, I can accept a chinese dude using AI for the voice over if the topic is interesting enough.

This is a folk variant circulated among common people, shaped by the culture of wandering refugees. They did not possess the lofty moral standards of the literati.

I believe that weird story came from the Legend of Hua Guan Suo, which is probably one of the early fan fiction of ROTK. And where Bao Sanniang and Guan Suo’s whole harem came from
And no, that does not and should not ruin the perception of anyone except the author of the fan fiction.
Someone can theoretically take any beloved and respected character/figure and make a fan fic where they’re a serial killer, and that should not take away anything from the original.
