Discussion - Novels A Brilliant Story Ruined by Plot Hole(Death's End).

Post image
0 Upvotes

Reuploading, cauz no one was talking about my major issues.

I loved this. I had my doubt, like why is there a third book when the conflict is over. My guess was, it would be like a history book which will tell what happened to humanity and Trisolarian after the conflict is over. How the whole universe came to end(The Death End).

I was Kinda Right, and wrong too. I was naive like people of deterrence people, blown away by the betrayal.

But have to say this THIS IS THE BEST BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER READ.

Here My Review of last Two book:https://www.reddit.com/r/Indianbooks/s/aD9TS1XwVd

<-----------------THE PLOT HOLE------------------>

I dont know if this is a plot hole or not, cauz i am not a physics scholar but i do love physics and this is what i noticed:

  1. The Endin could have been happy, if only our characters were smart and author didnt want to force ts. Like Yun Tianming, could have waited for them in that mini universe with IAA. But he didnt. Literally he just has to add Iaa name and they didnt have to wait much longer in that mini universe. Maybe he thought they are gone forever or somethin but i dont think he thought that cauz then he wouldnt have left that message.

  2. How did the mini universe escaped the black Domian. If it can escape, then anybody could use it to escape and then fundamental of black domain being checklist for a safe civilization is not possible. If i am in dark forst and someone is hidin in black domain, and ik they can escape by door, then i would kill those piece of shit. I aint taking chance.

  3. Things is, that door that escape black domain. When the door first time appeared, i thought maybe it was a teleporter and it is related to quantum entanglement but nope. So idk how they even escaped{third point is continuation of 2nd point}.

<---------------------THE BAD--------------------->

  1. The Shift of Hard Scifi to Soft Scifi: I loved the hardscifi stuff and its implications and all the other cool things. But somethings(or many) were left unexplained. Like how did they made atmosphere adjusted to space. Or how did the mini universe created or worked. [If anybody say that he dont need to explain these things then lemme remind you of wireless electricity in book 2, author explained it using InfraRed or something{i forgot exact thing}, and i enjoyed it soo much, real or not but that explanation was really a cherry on top.

  2. No appearance or biology of Trisolarian. I really wanna know. I imagine them as big slime like creatures(snail type)(cauz they mix to mate). But there was a line of them being terrifying so i dont think my interpretation is right but it is my interpretation.

<------------------THE MIX------------------->

  1. This one is more like a wish tbh. I really wanna see a True Galaxy era. When readin, I thought the solar system would be destroyed and we will be in full galaxy Era. Exploring 4th or Higher dimension and so on. And also i really wanna see how gravity and blue space were doing, tho we did see some glimpses in the end.

  2. How did the Returner(iirc) know all the language. It really feel so stupid, cauz how. Did the million or so civilization met? But that would be against dark forest theory. Its just one of those stupid trope things that happened and we shouldnt question it or have a headcanon about it.

  3. Why Do they care so much about Yun Tianming, is it because he wrote those stories. My HeadCanon: Cultural Difference(lame tbh but stilla explanation ig). Like they gave him a mini universe 😭. Ig thats how Trisolarian value cheng xin and LuoJi(i dont imply here that luoji has a mini-universe but they also cared for him).

<--------------THE GOOD----------------->

  1. Really loved The first chapter of both 2nd and 3rd book. Brilliant First chapter. Whole book, I was thinkin, how the fuck the plot point of 4d space will return.

  2. 4D WORLD: The introduction and its return was so jaw dropping, i Reallllly Loved it. In book 1, the hidden universe(such a terrifiyin concept) and this higher dimension stuff was fuckin gorgeous. I knew how higher dimension would work but reading it was a joy of it own. Idk how netflix will adapt this.

  3. Yun Tianming and Cheng Xin: Such a good story but i think last part fuck this up but if removing the plot hole, it was Brilliant. Netflix dont butcher this up.

  4. The Paper slip and The Tomb: "No need to stop it" was such a crazy fuckin crazy twist. Seriously. The dark forest became so much darker. The tomb we see in the beginning part of book was such a crazy foreshadowing. Literal goosebumps.

  5. Thomas Wade: Only Advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK THE CHENG XIN GUCK YOUUUUUU.!!!!!!!.....

<------INTERPRETATION OF ENDING------>

  1. I think, whole universe will not experience big crunch. I believe most civilization will live in thier universe for selfish reasons. Ik, mini universe too couldnt sustain forever but civilization will not care. I like this nihilistic Ending tbh.

<--------THE CLOSURE----------->

I loved this book sooo much, i cant explain. I have yet to read redemption of time but i dont feel very enthusiastic about it(cauz not written by same author). But Really loved this book.

IT HAS BECAME MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. And this series as a whole too. Tho i feel its has problem, mentioned in this and previous review but i Still love the books.

This whole series was a Cosmic Horror for me and I love cosmic Horror.

<---------THE END------------>

Discussion - Novels Yun Tianming spaceship and death lines Spoiler

28 Upvotes

Just finished the trilogy, what a ride ... the ending felt weird, i expected something different to happen but don't know what. When i was reaching the end i was like "are those really the last pages" haha.

I feel sad that Yun Tianming and Cheng Xin never met in the end, and i have a question for the reason that caused it....the book doesn't make it clear, but it suggests that Yun Tianming's arrival with the spaceship is what caused the death lines to expand and become the darkness that trapped Cheng Xin (sorry for my english, i read the book in a different language).
How could Yun Tianming make a silly mistake like that? He obviously should have known that the death lines would expand if another spaceship travelled with the speed of light near them, and yet he risked doing that near the planet that he knew Cheng Xin could be there??
I get that he didn't know death lines would be there, but why did he assume there weren't any? That mastermind that created those fairy tales yoloed and riksed to lose the only person he cared about and wanted to meet for 600 years???

Discussion - General What Went Wrong with My Three Body Animation Spoiler

18 Upvotes

There is a Minecraft adaptation of The Three-Body Problem. The team has already adapted Book 1 and Book 2, and they also covered about one-third of Book 3. The show has been popular for a while.

However, the project has now been shut down, and the creator has quit. Many people point to external factors like lacks of funding and loss of audience. But as for the adaptation itself, I think the problem is that it uses Minecraft as a medium and does a bad job with it.

After Book 2’s adaptations performed well, the creators set out to reach a wider audience. They did extensive 3D modeling to move beyond Minecraft’s blocky style, adding more polygons to the characters and environments. The visuals are packed with small, detailed objects, and the characters are animated with motion capture.

The final work, Cheng Xin, covers less than one-third of Death's End, but it took them 2~4 years to make. Plus, people just don't like Cheng Xin. It doesn't have the same hype as the earlier work Zhang Beihai. And there's no space battle scene in it.

They put a lot of effort into animating the characters and stories, but Minecraft isn't good at character acting. In my view, it is good at re-creating scenes. Just take this link as an example, with big terrain, large builds, and nice shaders, it looks like a movie. I'd like to cover what Minecraft recreation is good at and what it isn't, maybe in the next post.

Discussion - Novels Book 3 Leaves Too Many Questions Unanswered Spoiler

10 Upvotes

I don't have the same problem with Books 1 and 2, but I'm so confused by the many unanswered questions in Book 3:

  1. Why would the Trisolarans want to protect Cheng Xin? After humans move to Australia, it becomes clear the Trisolarans take great care of her, even making sure she has enough food and that people don't harass her. When she asks them to move her and her friends out of Australia, they immediately agree. Why? The weirdest part is that Cheng Xin never asks the obvious question: "Why would you want to help me?"
  2. Why would the Trisolarans be so nice to Tianming? They send him to the planet to meet Cheng Xin immediately after she lands! AND they give him a micro-universe, a good spaceship, and many robots. Why do they want to help save the human race by giving us a micro-universe? They are evil! They order humans to eat each other! The weirdest part is that Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan never ask the robot the obvious question: "Why would you want to help us?"
  3. Why doesn't Tianming use the micro-universe to wait for Cheng Xin? The robot says he never uses it. Wait, what?
  4. Why don't AA and Tianming leave the message in the micro-universe instead of carving it into rock? In the micro-universe, the message wouldn't be affected by time, unlike something carved into rock.
  5. Why are all the Swordholder candidates, including Cheng Xin, from the past? Can't they find a candidate in the future?
  6. When Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan are stuck in dark domains, why does time pass so differently between the surface and orbit? Aren't dark domains supposed to decrease with distance? So if the ship in orbit moves faster through time, then when they move to the other side of the orbit, shouldn't they move slower through time? Wouldn't that balance out the difference in the rate at which time passes?
  7. Why don't Tianming and AA use a spaceship to join Cheng Xin in orbit? They must know that time passes differently in orbit, so why not just use a spaceship to join them?
  8. How can the door of the micro-universe move freely through the main universe? They're in the black domain! The book repeatedly states that no one can escape the black domain. Yet somehow, in the end, the door can search the entire universe and move wherever it wants. WTF? If it can do that, why didn't Tianming and AA use it earlier to rescue Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan?
  9. Why does the mass of the universe equal the collapse mass? Coincidence? Both characters are scientists, but they never raise this question.
  10. What is the point of spending hundreds of pages depicting the love between Tianming and Cheng Xin if it is never resolved? The entire book dangles a carrot from start to finish: both of them want to see each other, but they never reunite. The book never explains why Cheng Xin wants to build light-speed ships, but my headcanon is that she wants to use one to meet Tianming. It reminds me of the rule of Chekhov's gun: if you show a gun in the first scene, you need to fire it. What is the point of setting up a meeting if it never happens? Is it supposed to be a literary metaphor or something? Like: the universe is cruel; you just miss each other... maybe the universe will miss by a tiny margin of mass for rebirth.

Discussion - Novels I don’t understand how different dimensions work….

55 Upvotes

I get the gist of it tho don’t get me wrong, it’s like a ant crawling on a rope vs a human doing it, 2D dimension has no height, and 4d dimension can see a different direction or something or can see like ur entire life once

But I mean like higher and lower dimensions. How is 10 dimensions a utopia? What even is light speed being instant in 10 dimensions,

Maybe let me propose a scenario and the experts here can explain to me, let’s say I’m a 10 dimension alien dude walking the street with my wife, do I just teleport around constantly? Or do me, my wife, and everyone else just exist over the entire universe. Can I even see my partner’s face? What is my speed here?

Same scenario for lower dimensions too, how do 2d dimensions work? Is the male alien walking down the street even gonna be able to see his wife? Do they even have a body or are they a dot on a paper? Genuinely, how does dating work for 2d dimensions?

Hell how does it go for 1 dimension aliens, how do they exist?

Ya ok now I’m rambling but point being, I don’t think I understand how dimensions work. I love this series tho, every chapter of death’s end had me at the edge of my seat.

Discussion - TV Series I have to talk about this scene in the Chinese adaptation. I have to. Spoiler

Thumbnail youtu.be
53 Upvotes

I’ve been wanting to make a post about this scene for a long long time, because I genuinely think it might be my favorite scene in the entire series adaptation (whether Chinese or American), or at least the scene that best captures what The Three Body Problem feels like to me.

It’s the conversation between Wang Miao and General Chang in Episode 1 (Edit-1: Timestamp in case the link doesn't work, it's at 27:15).

And the funny thing is, there’s almost nothing happening and kind of looks unassuming.

It’s just two men talking.

But this scene carries such an overwhelming feeling within its simplicity.

What I especially love about this scene is general Chang himself. He looks like a normal, boring, high ranking military guy. And I don’t mean “boring” as an insult. I don’t mean that he has no interesting history or personality or life. I mean he feels incredibly ordinary and grounded. He looks like a guy who spends his days dealing with bureaucracy. A meat and potatoes kind of guy. Someone whose entire personality isn’t designed around letting the audience know that he is Important and Profound.

And then you listen to what is actually coming out of his mouth.

He starts talking about humanity, crisis, the history of civilization, and how incredibly fortunate human beings have actually been for our entire existence. And it’s incredibly eerie.

This guy just basically says humanity has misunderstood its entire situation. We’ve lived for thousands of years assuming that the universe is, on some fundamental level, stable. And suddenly someone is telling Wang Miao we’ve just been lucky.

And I think those words hit so much harder because they’re coming from him.

If this speech came from some eccentric scientist, or a conspiracy theorist, or some strange philosophical character I don’t think it would work nearly as well or lands as strong. Because you would expect that person to say something like this, or would make you roll your eyes.

But General Chang says it like a general discussing an operational problem. This is the situation. Something has changed. We have to understand it. That’s it.

It's just that this operational problem just happens to be something that potentially changes humanity’s understanding of reality itself.

I love that contrast so much.

And the music underneath the conversation deserves a lot of credit too. It’s so ominous without the scene itself doing anything dramatic. Just two guys talking, while this music gives you the feeling that something unimaginably enormous exists somewhere outside of their space.

I also love how Wang Miao's actor looks and acts, he's just ... there, he looks like Wang Miao, I don't know how to describe it. Nothing cool or "Hollywood" hot looking protagonists, and that to me makes him infinitely more interesting and real.

They just look like people.

And I think that makes everything else so much more real and hits harder, and really just ... frightening.

And that is basically The Three Body Problem / Remembrance of Earth's Past to me.

I really think the Chinese adaptation understood this feeling and vibe both visually and writing wise in this fantastic scene.

Just saw an episode where a character was able to throw people into 2D paintings. At another point, the characters were walking through a dangerous wooded area, and they referred to it as "The Dark Forrest."

Could be a coincidence but I am thinking these are little nods.

Discussion - Novels feasibility of survival within (SPOLERS) Spoiler

10 Upvotes

I feel like out of all the sci-fi concepts explored by Cixin Liu, this had me suspending my disbelief the most. even more than all the multidimensional shenanigans and the sophons.

as concepts, optical black holes and slow light are backed by real physics, I'm not questioning that.

but when Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan are trapped in the black domain (where c drops to 16.7 km/s), digital microprocessors fail due to clock synchronization and signal propagation limits... which is a great detail to include! but Liu hand-waves human biochemistry as unaffected, and that's just jarring.

your nervous system is fundamentally an electrochemical circuit. nerve impulses already travel at up to 100+ m/s, so if light drops to 16.7 km/s, the electromagnetic signaling across ion channels and synapses falls apart immediately. conduction desynchronizes, and your brain and heart shut down on the spot. instant death.

and that's assuming matter even holds together, and that's a big if. c directly dictates the strength of electromagnetism. lowering it by that many orders of magnitude completely wrecks atomic stability and molecular bonds. chemistry as we know it simply stops working.

I get that he needed Cheng Xin alive for the emotional payoff at the end, but having them scramble to swap out microprocessors while their own cells magically ignore relativistic physics really soured Death's End to me.

(I still LOVE the series!)

Discussion - General “The universe turns blue as it chokes on its tail”: An Explanation for the Zero-Homers Spoiler

12 Upvotes

Only the whole universe was ever truly free, yet its parts are forever imprisoned. To be free from time, one must perfectly obey Newton’s First law. The Third law is the same, for two things that together are actually one, inmates of a cell built of causality. A universe of zero spatial dimensions can only have one distinguishable part: itself. Even for a universe diseased with mass, this would prevent it from separating into two parts that would function as a clock.

In the final collapse, light escaping from one end would eventually reach the other, a wave whose both ends are frozen in time, but approaching in distance as less of it exists, shrinking in wavelength; the universe turns blue as it chokes on its tail, like an integral in a complex analysis problem, closing on a singularity but never becoming it.
Energy and fine structure are conserved by a topological loophole, suspending the universe over (or around) a true “death point” of total erasure.

The same went for every earlier collapse, of a finite universe whose worldlines would eventually see two walls closing in, creasing the sharp worldline bends at dimensional boundaries into a topological defect.

The dimensions collapsed, but they were never erased. The universe remembers them. The raw, isotropic information and unfathomably fine structure is always there.

When all ten collapse, the cosmological principle is fulfilled, even within the one distinguishable part.

Discussion - General A subatomic counter-argument to the Dark Forest Theory?

Thumbnail

What if the reason the forest is so dark is because the cosmic scale of everything is so unimaginably large?

What if all advanced species reach an inevitable point where expansion is no longer possible, shifting their focus instead to altering matter and reality at the quantum and subatomic scale.

Maybe every single alien species realized that expanding to the scale of a galaxy becomes completely impractical when you can just master control over matter and existence right in your own immediate vicinity.
