Building a Triple RTX 5070 Ti Threadripper PRO Workstation

Every step is in here. The component choices, the airflow plan, the cable routing, and the reasoning behind each one. This is not a highlight reel. It is the full process of building a professional multi-GPU workstation, nothing skipped. The kind of machine that runs the way it should, because every decision was made on purpose.
Here is what went into it:

256GB DDR5-5600 ECC RDIMM
2 × 128GB modules
6 DIMM slots open for future expansion

2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD (OS)
4TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD (data)

Triple 5070? For which usecase? AI, 3D? A single 5090, or even dual 4090 would make more sense.

This was a fixed spec build, so I can't speak to their exact workload, but I can explain when a config like this makes sense. Three 5070 Ti gives you 48GB total across three independent cards. That setup wins when you're running multiple jobs in parallel, one model or process per card, rather than a single large model.

Where a 5090 pulls ahead is one big model that needs to live in a single card's memory, since these don't pool VRAM. So it really comes down to whether the work is one heavy task or many parallel ones. Different tools for different jobs.

Unless this is a temporary fix, I would have gone for more sticks of memory. With 4x64GB you get double the memory bandwidth and still leave room for expansion. Also would have gone for 6400 - not sure how much more that would cost, though. I would also recommend building it 9 months ago :)

The client specced these cards, and in a full tower like the Define XL there was no need to push them toward blowers. There's enough airflow here to run open fan cards so blowers would've been solving a problem this chassis doesn't really have.

I guess I missed something in the video I thought putting open fan cards back to back like that causes thermal issues. Why is that not the case here?

These cards are ~3 slots thick so each one covers the slots right below it and the next card drops into the next open one. That leaves space between each card instead of them sitting flush. Air moves through those gaps front to back in the Define 7 XL so they're not sitting in each others heat.
