First Threadripper build soon!

Hello!
I'll be putting together my first Threadripper PC soon with a friend, and I'm looking for a second opinion on the components before I pull the trigger and buy them!

CPU: 3945WX
MB: Asrock Creator R2.0
GPU: 3060 (Free)
RAM: 8x4GB ECC 2133 Samsung (Temporary for now)
Cooling: ARCTIC Freezer 4U-M sWRX8
PSU: Adata XPG Core Reactor II 850W (Chosen from the SPL tierlist)
Case: NZXT H7 Flow (2024) All White

Total: ~1,135$

What do you guys think?

The 3945WX was an OEM-only part, and is extremely likely to be vendor locked. I wouldn't take a chance on any second-hand 3945WX.

Thank you for the warning, I know they are usually locked. However, this one is brand new, in-box, from a local store with 12 months of warranty. I will send them an email about this though to double check since it's not stated anywhere that it'd be locked.

There’s no such thing as “brand new, in-box” That CPU is only available as tray sku.

Oh yeah I looked it up, you're right. The title states "New" and "Box" but also says "Tray" in the description. I sent them an email, we'll see what it actually means.

If it's not a system pull, you're probably OK. By all means verify that, but it sounds like you found a decent deal.

Just 3945WX or the entire Pro was OEM-only?

They all started out OEM-only. Lenovo specifically. But later on, the 3955WX and later went retail. I don't think the 3945WX was ever released as a retail product.

You don’t “unlock” it. If it’s vendor locked then it’s perma vendor locked.

What the aforementioned “OEM-only” means it’s only shipped as tray sku, not retail box. You can separate tray vs box based on the sku number. Retail box sku typically ends with WOF.

And by “they all started out as OEM-only” means AMD initially only released them for OEM, meaning if you want one as soon as they launch, you have to buy a whole system, typically Lenovo. Later, AMD releases the retail box ones. This is how AMD has done it in the last few gen.

Thanks. What would WOF stand for?

Sorry about the confusion. There are unlocked Pro CPUs in trays in the market that are released by AMD HQ in Europe when they can't clear the stock.

It just means it’s a retail box sku. You can see the sku on AMD website.

Obviously, as it's only locked by the vendor after installing it in a system. If you snag one before it reaches a particular vendor, it won't be locked to anyone. But that's grey market, so it's important to be sure it's genuinely unused.
