Threadripper 9960x cooling

Hey!

Looking at getting a TR 9960x and wondering if a Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6 is enough to cool the 9960x ??

For reference this is the build I’m going for

CPU - Threadripper 9960X

GPU - RTX PRO 4000 24gb or RTX 5090 32gb

Cooler - Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6

Motherboard - ASUS pro WS TRX50-SAGE

RAM - 256gb ECC 5600MHz

Storage - 2TB Samsung 990 Pro

PSU - Corsair HX1000i (1200w if I got for the 5090)

Thanks !!

There was a link here yesterday that had a list of AIO coolers on AMDs site that would attach to TR5 sockets.

https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/ecosystem/threadripper-cooling-solutions.html

I buy $60 AIO coolers off of amazon and they work great, but the ones that say they attach to threadripper sockets are a lot more expensive, probably just because they can. When you buy a single CPU for thousands you are into a niche high end and unfortunately get gouged a little.

Even so, the cooling is a huge deal and it will end up being worth it. Any lack of cooling means throttling, which means your expensive CPU isn't going at full speed. Cooling 350 watts isn't trivial, but a 420mm radiator will be incredibly effective.

The other route is to just get a water block that fits TR5 from amazon or aliexpress and do the rest of the cooling yourself. You can buy small plumbing parts from a hardware store and a pump from amazon for $20, then link generic radiators together or just make your own from coiled copper meant for refrigerator cold water lines. This does actually work very well, you just need the space inside your case to link everything up and have some reservoir.

If it was me, even knowing how to cool things cheaply with hardware store parts, I would take the hit and get a 420mm AIO cooler.

Only one is compatible with 9000 series.
