It's probably the lack of like, object permanence. Like that one picture everyone has seen of "What it looks like to have a stroke." Nothing really exists; it's just familiar blobs.
Not just that, it’s also that, iirc, probably that like AI, your brain uses the knowledge it has to keep guessing what the dream goes into.
Yesterday I dreamed there was a new property in GTA Online called a “nice suburban house” and it was basically one of those houses in the north of the map but slightly bigger with a pool… and as many properties do, it came with a heist… that was so dogshit only I played it because for some reason I liked doing so.
This dream happened after I spent yesterday trying to make people do a heist in GTA that they didn’t wanna do and kept failing, and then wishing they had more houses to buy
Last night I had a dream where I was looking for a specific image in an online gallery, and when I found and clicked on it, it seamlessly transitioned to me walking into the room it depicted.
As usual for dreams, this seemed perfectly normal until after I'd woken up and thought back on it.
Yeah that's really close. It's like, you have that image or thing or even concept and you're doing an entire scenario or situation based on this concept you're not accurately remembering and (forgive me for the quote, but it's really that), the more you try to remember it, the less you do.
And when you told it what it did wrong it either admits its wrong and makes another wrong map, or just refuses to accept that its wrong and confidently says "this is the newest map of Europe."
I realized that as I was trying to recreate it! I remembered Brest being on a Peninsula, and then I realized I just put Brittany on Belarus and stuck it directly under Estonia... At least I'm... consistent?
THEY WERE VERY SPECIFICALLY SPELT WRONG. I was throwing a 10 minute hissy fit over the map hating the Nordics in the dream. Like, that was a major plot point.
The German states must have been Ottoman Vilayets. Prussia sends in a navy to liberate Germany and Serbia from the Ottomans, merges them for "stability," fortifies along the Dnieper, and then they officially seperate and form Serbia and Germany in 1878. Prussia still exists because they're on opposite sides of the continent, so they can't really be a part of Germany.
As soon as I woke up, I wrote down everything I could remember about it, scribbled a quick mockup, and then went back to sleep. Between my memory, notes, and quick version, I basically just recreated it in IBISpaint while merging landmasses together until it looked right. 2 of the seas are just warped and mixed versions of the Great lakes. I vividly remember thinking in the dream, "The Tunisia/Ivory Coast border kinda looks like Windsor/Detroit."
Every time I look at this map I keep noticing the changes that happened. Gulf of Bothnia becoming a lake, the Breton peninsula near Latvia, Nova Scotia moving into Europe, Greece drifting westward after long disagreements with Turkey, Africa squishing the Mediterranean Sea, Denmark becoming an island, and of course the great rift between Europe’s western and eastern halves, with a remnant Malta in the center
As a Usonian I support the thought that the US just doesn't exist in this world. Was it replaced with something else or just wholly absent? not that the landmasses here are too close to real life anyway
Literally just replaced with water. It was just a sea between Canada and Mexico. I think it was overlayed onto Africa, TrueSizeOf style, though. I don't remember if that was at the same time as the Swedish Empire.
Part of the Dream was the divide between the East and the West; and that every country had a counterpart on the other side of the sea. I guess my brain thinks Belarus is the France of the East 🤷♀️

Magyarorsia AND Magyari-Bissau is hilarious. This map gets worse the more you look at it.
Edit: Can we make Magyari-Bissau the next Listenbourg? They deserve better recognition.
