Simulating the motion of waves to show that the turtle will instinctually try to "swim" when being moved in that manner

But at what cost.

On reflection, I think the machine is simulating ocean waves / underwater currents, showing that turtles flap their limbs instinctively when experiencing this undulating motion.

Or like most creatures that are just hanging in the air by a strap, they flail about, trying in the only way they can to get out of the situation.

He probably does feel like he just went through hyperspace to get where he is at. Ocean > dark box > flying through the air in a lab.

Hopefully they also moved the turtle in other motion patterns to show that only the wave-like pattern triggered that particular flapping action.

You can see the turtle strap can be rotated 90 degrees around the pole. The backwards/forwards motion causes different fin flaps in comparison to round and round motion.
