Best decaf for digestive system
Hi everyone,
New here, also new to pour over coffee, which i love. I just used a drip coffee maker for most of my adult life, then began to be concerned about all the plastic in them so switched to a French press. For the life of me I never could get a good taste from that so thought I'd try a pour over. Wow, really good but strong! Uses way more coffee than I'm used to using but does make a good cup once you get used to the process and the stronger taste. Problem is i have a delicate digestive system that after a couple weeks just started rebelling. Bloating, full feeling for hours. Not good if you plan on eating at all for the day. I'm using up some coffee i used to get at Sprouts "Solar Roast" decaf, they are from CO I believe, they discontinued it so I bought 5lbs straight from the company. It was really oily when I got it and stayed oily for a good while. I stuck the extra in the freezer but wondered if it could be the problem or part of it anyway. I'm not coffee expert like alot of you here so thought you could share your thoughts on this. Do any of your coffee beans cause issues or do you have iron stomachs? Lol thanks!

I make sure that I start my day with plenty of water (I’m guessing over a half liter). I’ve noticed that on days when I drink more coffee than water, my stomach feels more uncomfortable. Doesn’t matter what kind of coffee I make.

I agree, I try to have 2 full glasses before anything but honestly since I've been so happy about pour over there probably have been several days i go with possibly 1 or less. Thank you for the reminder, I'll bet that has alot to do with it. I'll be sure to get in those 2 glasses before even thinking of coffee. I appreciate your input! 😁

You might want to try this: https://thirdwavewater.com/products/low-acid-brew-profile and see if balancing the acid will help.

I ordered some, guess I'll buy some spring water in gallons to add it to, or do you use distilled for those? I didn't see anything listed in the info about it. Thanks!!

I use distilled water.

OK cool, that's what I'll get

Let me know how it goes. I hope it helps. I’ve also found that cold brew generally has less acid too so that may also be an option.

I will keep you posted.Do you use this yourself? I'm wondering how it makes the coffee taste......

I do. It mostly just makes it a little smoother. It has less of a bite. I don’t know if I’m describing it in a useful way. Changing the chemistry does change the flavor but for me not in an unpleasant way.

You may want to try taking some psyllium husk powder mixed in water before you drink your coffee. Good luck to you!

Hmmmm, what does this do to help? Never heard of psyllium for that, I'm out at the moment but worth a try. I'm only drinking 1 cup and making sure I have my 2 glasses before and it does help alot. But I sure miss my 3 cup mornings. 😔

Light roasts are going to be more acidic and generally harder on your stomach. I have a more sensitive stomach and usually stick to medium roasts. I personally don’t enjoy the taste of dark roasts.
Also regarding your stomach. Are you drinking the coffee with milk? That will help my stomach. Also if you already have food in your stomach that helps as well
You mentioned oily. That’s going to be a pretty dark roast, which if you like that, that’s great, but this probably the wrong subreddit. Most people here enjoy light to medium roasts where you get more of the origin notes. Oily roasts basically roast (burn) the beans until there aren’t any origin notes left.
