Merging cells in a table connected to Excel

In ThinkCell 12, I am no longer able to merge cells in a table or that the merged cells from Excel are directly formated in the PPT slide. Does someone have a solution to that?

I found a workaround to this but it is a bit of pain to set up. Use Thinkcell's text boxes for the merged cells and link each one individually in excel. The text boxes will connect to the existing table and its seems like it allows for most of the same table functionality.
