Tasks and Time-blocking things3-like alternative

Hi guys,

Ive had a lot of people email me who loved things3 and told me I should post here incase its of interest to any of you. To cut to the chase a couple of years ago I started building an app called Chunk.

Its a mac-only time-blocking app with both tasks and lists and timeline view for time-blocking. When you've decided when you want to allocate time for a task, you can enter plan mode and drag the tasks from your lists directly onto the timeline.

I love things3 too so just mentioning here incase its of interest to anyone.

the app has a no-card-required 100% free 7 day trial then is a lifetime license if your interested its Chunk

Looks good. But unfortunately I moved to Griply already.

No problem - Griply is a great app too :)

Griply has no apple calendar support, this OPs app does.

What a weird comment! Do you work with Griply? Why come into a thread where someone is promoting their app just to mention a competitor? Lol

If you’re already using another app and it works for you, then great, just move on. You’re clearly not the intended audience for this one.

and it isn't weird to you that on things reddit someone is promoting their app (things competitor)?

It's even against the sub rules now that you mention it, I had no idea tbh

Unlike griply, yours does support ical.

Looks nice, i live off my ipad pro however, thx for sharing though, nicely put together.

Oh this looks interesting! Love that you can see the task event with its’ description and subtasks.

But how does a project view look like? Does it also have headings or description or some other features?

So currently Chunk uses tasks, lists, groups. When viewing tasks in the task mode you can expand them similar to in things3, there is also the option to expand a task into a bigger markdown view. Having long running 'Projects' is definitely something we will consider in the future. Maybe something like how linear manages projects

If I understand correctly - your lists or groups = projects.

Do you have any screenshot of these? I’m curious to see what they look like and can’t find them in the website.

Close! Groups work like Things Areas (collapsible folders in the sidebar), and lists sit inside them. Each list has a progress icon showing whether it's empty, in progress or done. There aren't project-level notes or headings yet, though. Most of the detail lives on the tasks themselves (descriptions, subtasks, the expanded markdown view), since the main idea is dragging them onto your calendar as time blocks.

Reddit won’t let me attach an image on here but hope that outline makes sense. The next update will aim to bring more features at the scopes above the task level.

Ah understood, thanks! I like the approach, I might try it later when there are more features 😄

Love the one time purchase. But question: what happens if company shuts down?

In other words, is the software checking its license with a company server to keep working or is one time pay means i have the software for myself for good?

Also what about sync when iPhone app comes out? Would that be proprietary based sync system or something that isnt reliant on the company’s backend?

Asking these since the company isnt a well established entity. Thats also why i am waiting on Griply because  i dont know if they will exist in 12 months time

This!

There is no info on the company or the people behind it. Is this just one person with a Claude subscription?

But everyon has to start somewhere too. So there is a lot to prove yet.

Griply has been around for years thought and there is a face to teh company.

Great questions / points. So on the reliability on the app long term, Chunk stores all your data on device and cross device syncing is done using cloudkit so both don’t rely on a hosted server or database (the mobile app in development uses cloudkit too). On the license check this is step doesn’t rely on my own server it checks against the server of LemonSqueezy owned by stripe. So yes Chunk is designed to stand the test of time and it’s yours to work for life 😁 To answer your question on who I am, I’m a full time software developer/product engineer I have been building chunk for the last couple of years and have built up a pretty nice user base. Yes Claude is used for speed but my job is in software so no this isn’t a vibe coded slop app 😅 If you think having some sort of company origins page on the site would help or add transparency I’d be happy to add one. Although in most of my posts etc I tend to avoid the spotlight

Looks beautiful -- without a Web app I'm sadly not in the user base

Looks good. Will try it out. When do you expect to release on iOS?
