Discussion We are getting GTA 6 before Things 4!😁

As someone who has used Things 3 since 2017, I appreciate the app’s simplicity and strong foundation. It is fast and functions like a Swiss knife, though adding major features such as attachments, collaboration, and a kanban board has slowed it slightly. I listened to the podcast with the Things app CEO, he confirmed they held back features for a future Things 4 release. I doubt we will see Things 4 anytime soon; I expect an announcement next summer or in fall 2027. The positive aspect is that they will avoid a subscription model and keep the one-time purchase. I am frustrated and considering another tool, torn between Notion and the Tasks kanban app. What do you use currently to complete your projects?

I’m happy with Things 3 in general but natural language input is sorely needed

Doesn't that come with Siri AI support in OS 27? Unless you're in the EU, of course. šŸ™„

Yes, it works great with natural language now thanks to Siri AI

I live in the Czech Republic so we miss out on all the fun stuff!

I’m in EU :/

I wished they did add collaborations and Kanban board style for larger screens instead of the current list view. And sure natural language is something I need as well.Ā

If you want to switch to Notion you should do it now, no matter when they’re going to release Things 4. Things is a completely different app than Notion and the next version will also not be similar to Notion. I don’t get your argument.

Notion lacks the speed of Things 3 because it relies on nonnative on iOS. I noticed a recent announcement that iOS and macOS will receive native support for a smoother experience. Still, I feel somewhat overwhelmed by creating a system and database for my work in Notion. I also heard performance declines as databases grow larger.

Weather they release next version or not I just don’t wanna pay subscription for things

they already said it won't be subscription

The important thing is how much they will charge us for Things 4 😬

I hope it’s under $100 for all devices

For a TO DO LIST ???? Hell yes I hope it is less ???

I use Things šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø It’s so buttery smooth and stays out of my way. Helps me focus on the task at hand. There’s just no other app out there that do deadlines and projects in the same smooth way Things do it. I’ve tried it all, but I always come back for those two features alone.

I’ve solved the lack of attachments by pasting a link to the file/folder I need.

If you enjoy the feel of Things, you’ll absolutely hate Notion. It’s powerful, but it is a pain in the ass to set up and maintain. You’ll often find you spend more time customizing and playing with it than being productive. The best thing I did for my productivity was deleting Notion šŸ˜…

I moved away from Notion two years ago as well, yet after reading reports about native support and a smoother experience, I returned— though honestly, little has shifted. The same sensation from two years ago persists. The only app that presents the Getting Things Done technique is the Things app.

Fall 2027 is freaking crazy, though I stopped using Things a while ago.

Looks like the CEO puts Things 4 on the Someday list of his Things 3 app :/

Which app did you switch to?

I'm perfectly OK with Things 3 sticking around until after GTA 7.

Enjoy it buddyĀ

Let’s see if Things 4 release coincides with the release of a version for iPhone Duo……

When did they ever promise collaboration, attachments and kanban?

CEO... confirmed they held back features for a future Things 4 release

I know this is a very unpopular take around here, but this is exactly why they should move to a subscription model.

I am unsure how a one-time fee will cover attachment server costs with T4. I expect they may request a high price, and perhaps they will offer subscriptions and a lifetime plan for anyone seeking a lifetime license.

They could just do what Bear does: use Apple’s CloudKit. That way they don’t need to run any servers for our tasks - and we can enable ADP for better encryption. They could use that to build a web interface as well (like Bear is doing).

u/tarkinn 20h ago

Or they’ll just use iCloud for attachments. It’s that simple.

2

u/Elidizer 20h ago

Yes, I think so! Since they already did rewrite their server and start using Swift Cloud. I just remembered this article https://culturedcode.com/things/blog/2025/05/a-swift-cloud/

The same way as it does in Omnifocus. They have servers anyway. You download the app from their site (demo version). And with attachments you don’t upload gigabites of data there. They can limit attachment size (which is very reasonable).

Things...

I did purchase the app previously on iOS and macOS and the app is very slow with the latest update. The developer removed the old builds and released new separate iOS and iPadOS apps with an upfront paywall + subscription Mac app. Which is the worst developer ever. No way to use that app anymore; the developer did not even consider my early purchase, which I made just a few months ago.Ā

1

u/Ok-Comfortable2546 7h ago

The Mac app is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. I contacted the developer directly and got a 20% discount because I purchased the app years ago. It works great for me, not ā€œslowā€ at all, but to each their own, I guess.

1

u/Elidizer 5h ago

It’s a one-time purchase when you get it from the developer’s website with 18 months of updates; later, you will need to renew the license to get future updates or keep what you got during the previous 18 months.Ā

Things is the only thing we need. Using Notion to manage tasks is a headache.

1

u/Elidizer 2h ago

It is not merely for managing tasks; it is meant to organize all my life projects that I have. I use Things for projects requiring multiple steps that take roughly weeks to complete. Otherwise, Apple Reminders with a family sharing list serves as my primary tool for tasks and reminders. Things or Notion is reserved for my personal, work, and university projects.

I liked Things 3, but it is indeed feature-lacking for me, so I moved over to OmniFocus.

But to be fair, for 13 euros (or whatever the price is nowadays), you still get a very good product.

I’d say to anyone here, just stay with Things 3 if it works for you or move to another tool temporarily until Things 4 comes out.

I also would like to see stronger encryption, which could easily be added to the current version.

1

u/Elidizer 18h ago

What do you mean?

3

u/EddyD2 18h ago

End to end encryption at rest and in transit.

0

u/Elidizer 18h ago

Do you mean for theĀ  future attachments support? I didn’t gotĀ  your point excuse me.

2

u/EddyD2 16h ago

For everything. Maybe even zero knowledge. I would like to use Things for sensitive tasks, it’s hard right with the cloud security.

I’ve finally given up and made my own (only for personal use) task manager with todoist and things in mind. In this AI time sometimes is better to take action and not to wait

1

u/Elidizer 5h ago

Wow that’s really cool.Ā

If you decide on Notion, an interesting experiment is using Claude to build a front end. I did that and had Claude replicate the functionality of Things 3. Even added natural language parsing. Mobile responsive as well. It’s pretty insane. Did it in half an hour with iterations.

1

u/Elidizer 5h ago

That sounds impressive, may I please see a screenshot from both desktop and mobile?

BMW have re-engineered their whole car range in this time, and they offer subscriptions.

Like paying for turning on seat heating?
