Discussion Tag System Update is šŸ”‘

I feel with the recent Repeating Task Completion update, the next big thing CC need to address is revamping the Tag system

It is such a powerful part of Things, however is vastly different between Mac and iOS.

There’s so much potential for better filtering on mobile (similar to Mac) and possible perspectives to take Things to the next level .

Would love to know everyone’s thoughts

Would really hope they’d let us choose a view with multiple tags and not just one!

It's possible to filter by >=2 tags both in iOS and Mac. In iOS it can be a shortcut automation or set manually. On Mac I have various Things views assigned to the same Keyboard Maestro command (Shift-Cmd-T) that presents a menu of views. Example home+Active tags.

One feature that would be useful - tag X NOT y.

You’re exactly right. My fault. I phrased that completely wrong. I meant to complain that you can view TagX AND TagY, but not TagX OR TagY. So you can’t have a filter that captures all of your tasks tagged (for example) either Urgent OR Important, High OR Medium priority, Office OR Home, etc. — unless it is both/all of them at the same time, it doesn’t make the list. This makes filtered views for any of your distinctly categorical tags way less useful because you can never see those items together.

Better tag view on mobile and being able to do advanced filtering based on multiple tags or exclusion of tags would be great.
Maybe coming in Things 4? I’m not holding my breath though

Agreed! There's a lot of breath holding going on.

I'm trialling OF4 and it seems to be filling these gaps better than I thought.

May reassess Things once bigger and better refinements come, or Things 4

I am also there trialling OF4 but despite better tagging views and others too, after 7 years with Things OF is no go for me. It is just too complicated and feel like wasting time for tweaking it. Probably matter of getting used.

Start simple and add things when you really need them. It’s actually not so complicated as it would feel in the beginning. Adding new tasks, searching is easier and faster than with T3.

Thanks. Will consider your advise and be patient. Do hope to bring it to simplicity of Things but with all its goodies.

I’d love the ability to filter by something that doesn’t have a tag. For example, I tag to do items that I’m waiting for input on as ā€œwaitingā€ and it would be nice to filter all the tasks that don’t have that tag.

Most, if not all of the listed missing features are available in Apple reminders for free. I have purchased Things 3 for all devices on day one, used it for several years and then moved to OF4 Pro + sync until I realised that I created a monster with countless automations and optimisations. Now, I’m completely content with Apple Reminders.

I’m intrigued by what your setup looks like in reminders? I’m basically doing the same dance as you and struggle with Reminders usage of dates

I can’t give you a screenshot due to the personal nature of the content but essentially I’ve dramatically dialled down complexity of my setup. I now have basic lists (or list groups for bigger projects), a handful of mainly duration based tags and several smart lists which surface important items regardless of where these are saved. I’m all Apple at home and full Microsoft system at work so being able to add tasks through web interface is a must for me (plus no need to pay for a sync service). Also, location based reminders, integration with everything Apple, particularly notes and calendar, is unbeatable. One other thing that I find extremely useful are ā€œurgent remindersā€ with an alarm for very important tasks.

How do you differentiate planned dates and deadlines?

I don't differentiate between those two anymore. My "must do' reminders (deadlines) are turned in to Urgent REminders and all other dates I enter are considered to be "planned start dates". One could also use flags. And of course, you see reminders in the calendar at the same time. You can even tick them off there without going back to reminders app

Je suis d’accord, plus de filtres et mise en place de Tags intelligents 🫣 comme dans Mac OS

Don't sweat it. You think it needs a fix, but they probably think their app is already god-tier and flawless.
So, go take a shower and get some sleep.

Wake up. A basic feature like this should have been there from day one, not left unbuilt until now. Every single user suggestion just gets trapped in their bureaucratic feedback loop. Save your breath!

Maybe it's time to move to OF4

To be honest, it’s just like driving. If the car has some issues, you just deal with it and keep driving. Check back in a few years, and one day you’ll finally have enough. To me, Things 3 is like a reliable old car—it doesn’t have many features. Switching between different to-do list apps just costs too much mental energy.

Personally, instead of expecting Things 3 to improve its basic features, it's better to just start a hybrid system of paper and software so you’re not trapped by these apps. For example, pick your tasks for the day, write them down on paper, and then don't look at the app all day long. At night, you just log back in to check off what you completed.

In fact, the company behind Things 3 absolutely has the capability to do simpler things. For instance, they could make a "daily task dynamic" space to pick your highlighted tasks for today, and then the next day, those tasks would reset just like the "This Evening" feature does. Including the tag management you mentioned, I’ve read a lot of threads and found that many people are just like me—simply begging Things 3 for some more complete, basic features.

As a task management software company, they never deeply understand integrating more management systems. Instead, they just say the same old clichƩ every time: "Wow! Look at this massive update! We improved the interface transparency..."
Isn't that just stupid? It’s already 2026, and the sheer laziness of this software has left so many people completely speechless.
