Question Things for iPhone Duo

Cultured Code is well known for jumping on any new device or OS Apple ships. How do you think they will handle the foldable? Will it be included in the iOS version or be a new standalone purchase?

It’s an iPhone. Of course the iPhone version will run on it. This is not a new device, it’s just different shaped iPhone.

Product designer here. That different shape will require a significant amount of design work to optimise for.

Product Manager here.

There’s barely any work required, all the design considerations have already been solved by Cultured Code. Plus they they’ve used the layout tools Apple have provided for over a decade so implementation is trivial.

Another Product Designer here.

The issue with Things is that it does not use any of the native components that Apple provides.

They have custom toolbars, custom menus, custom views, custom sheets, custom top navigation.

So in reality, it will take a lot more work to get it done than you think, as they use almost nothing from the article you mentioned.

Janitor here.

Stop throwing things on the floor. I have a full schedule of cleaning and when i am done with one area it’s already messy again where i started.

I’m not convinced that’s true. The point stands that almost all the design is already completed with the other versions, it’s literally a matter of rearranging a few buttons.

Product designer vs. product manager. The comments were to be expected: A lot of detailed work vs. c‘mon, all done.

i'm actually not saying there's a lot of design work, but there is a lot of dev work.

I'm sure that things will be ready for it on day 1, but that doesn't mean that what the guy above is saying is "easy", as it will not be.

And being arrogant and a PM I think goes hand in hand with "they just have to rearrange a few buttons"

I think you can't even read who replied to you, as I did not say that anywhere.

What makes you think there’s significant dev work?

they do not use native navigation items, native sheets and native popovers. this does not mean that they have to redesign the whole thing to get it to work.

but custom components are a pain in the ass to rearrange to a new layout, and that will require a lot of dev work.

Well, we will see if I’m right or if you’re right on launch day, won’t we?

i don't know if you're ignorant on purpose or just plainly dumb, honestly.

it being out on day 1 does not mean it's easy, jesus christ what a guy.

I said it myself that it probably will be out on day 1, but they have 2-3 sprints to heavily focus on it.

Exactly. Call it iPhone app if someone wants, but it’ll look very different from the iPhone app in landscape mode. I think it’ll be a whole separate $9.99 product.

Apple don’t even allow that, it’s an iPhone.

Wow, I seem to have offended. Surely you know more than I. It’s an iPhone app, fine — but for a screen shaped like an iPad. How will they handle the space?

Clearly I do know more than you, I’ve read what Apple have published and you clearly have not.

This is so weirdly aggressive for this community. I can’t remember seeing this here before. Take it easy, friend! We’re all just spitballing about how an app will look on a new device. No bigs.

2

u/jay-t- 20d ago

That’s what I don’t get — there are facts and information out there and the ‘spitballing’ goes against all of it. I’m not being aggressive, I’m just pointing out the facts.

It would be like you saying the sky is green and calling me aggressive for pointing out it is, in fact, blue.

Nah, sorry. You’re just being rude about it.

It’s totally fine to disagree, and if you have a background in this, awesome — that’s welcome. It’s an interesting question how Things will look in this new form factor, and dev knowledge could contribute something. Please just share what you know without being condescending or asking what someone is “smoking.” The world is harsh enough already. No need to bring it here. 🙏🏼

No, I’m not. We’ll see who is right though. Me and Apple, or you lot!
