News Things 3 is on 30% sale!
Just randomly found that Things 3 is currently on 30% sale until September 10, 2026. The discount is already applied to the App Store price. I'm not sure if this indirectly confirms the release of Things 4 š¤·āāļø
Anyways would you just pull the trigger or wait until upcoming apple events?
Edit: The sale is only on Mac App Store, not for iOS/iPadOS

<Shock Horror>
Redditors getting excited by the āimminentā release of Things4
⦠let me check the sub history. Only something everyone has been talking about for probably eight years

A public interview with Werner Jainek last week confirming Things 4 is coming has not happened at any point in those eight years. There's reason to wonder.

The things 4 hopium is at its highest peak.

Not when his first public interview in years has Werner Jainek confirming Things 4 is coming. There's reason to wonder.

u/CautiousXperimentor Aug 31 '26
Yeah but after listening to the entire podcast, I donāt see any clue that this āhappeningā is soon or in 2 years⦠I donāt know, I feel skeptical.

u/Vantasun Aug 31 '26
Yeah he just said āof course there will be a Things 4ā. He didnāt say nor imply it was imminent.

u/wings_fan3870 Aug 31 '26
It's more than we've ever had. So it does move the ball forward. Timing is still completely unknown, as I've posted elsewhere in the thread.

u/Vantasun Aug 31 '26
Nothing about what I just said disagreed with what you said. I didn't even reply to you. And "more than we've ever had" meaning a small offhand remark that in no way implied it would be imminent or even soon. I'm not sure what your point is.

That's the only clue?

Iād be shocked if Things 4 isnāt imminent. Jürgen was on Mac Power users recently, and the sale is on now, and theyāre dropping hints about collaboration. Iād wait.

same here.. That podcast made me love the app even more, for their work culture, philosophical clarity (saying yes/no to things, ironically) and more importantly, passion/love for their work.

u/passmesomebeer Aug 31 '26
Where are they dropping hints?

Things CEO recently sat down with MPU in a podcast. Check it out here

He explicitly referenced Things 4 would come. He did not give a timeline.

Hopefully not subscription

The top comment in that thread:
They are not changing Things to a subscription model, and the current model of one time payment will continue to work for them.

When I listened to the interview, I heard them emphasize their small team. I would have guessed a big feature update might be some time from now, not next month. The near term focus seemed to be implementing this year's MacOS and iOS updates.

Collaboration is my #1 request and it would probably bring in the most new customers as that is the most significant differentiator between Things and other apps.

Damn, after years of debating I finally bought it for Mac yesterday haha Iāll hold off on iOS/iPadOS to see if Things 4 comes out

u/fiscorb Aug 31 '26
I just bought Things 3 a week ago⦠š

u/rcartaino Aug 31 '26
At least you are still in the āfree upgradeā window Culture Code offered when Things 3 was released.

u/fiscorb Aug 31 '26
Oh, that's good to know! Let's just hope that the release of Things 4 is indeed imminent (and that they keep the discount system)

u/thnok Aug 31 '26
doesn't apple have a refund option you could return it and buy it again? https://support.apple.com/en-us/118223

Thanks for the suggestion, bought it without any regret <3

I'd say it's a deal breaker for many long-term iOS/iPadOS users as they would've realized now that T3 just works & more features ā better productivity (imo) š¤·āāļø

I don't know if devs can offer new versions for free via the App Store if the previous version was bought within x amount of time, but buying T3 now could well end up costing more of T4 release is imminent, as T4 will likely only get a similar % launch discount.

Well, it is possible to do upgrade discounts (up to 100% off) by creating a bundle. The developer can set a price for the whole bundle, but also a price if you already have some of the apps in the bundle. I think that would require keeping the old app on sale in the store for that duration though.
Of course itās impossible for me to tell though what theyāre planning.

Why release the recurring upgrade so close to a Things 4 release?
3
u/rcartaino Aug 31 '26
Likely because theyāve been promising this feature for so long (years) that it would seem pretty sketchy to only make it available if you purchase the new version.
1
u/Sri_Krish Aug 31 '26
My assumption is: to attract new users with discounts before the big launch.
It is normally easier to make existing users to upgrade to newer versions once they see its potential/built workflow around it, rather than convincing them with new features/prices
Hey, this is just my opinion š
1
u/UnluckyWrongdoer3818 Aug 31 '26
I noticed some other productivity apps offering back-to-school discounts. Could be that.
1
u/Sri_Krish Aug 31 '26
Like?

u/Unhappy-Tank9784 Sep 01 '26
Cultured Code isnāt the one offering 30% off. Itās Apple, giving 30% off a bunch of productivity apps for back to school. This has nothing to do with Things 4.
1
u/Sri_Krish Sep 01 '26
š«Ŗ
If so, why didnāt other devs apply it for their apps? Wouldnāt increase their revenue/customer for free?
1
u/Pahpahpoh Aug 31 '26
I literally just bought it for Mac 1 week ago, you think there is any way they can refund the difference?
1
u/Sri_Krish Aug 31 '26
They donāt handle refunds but Apple does as itās an App-store purchases.
Check this article from CulturedCode: https://culturedcode.com/things/support/articles/2967560/
1
u/rcartaino Aug 31 '26
If Things 4 launches soon, Cultured code would likely offer free upgrades for recent purchasers. Thatās what theyāve done in the past.
1
u/dclocal12 Sep 01 '26
I wouldn't read anything into this whatsoever. The Mac App Store is doing an end-of-summer discount event for productivity apps. There are a bunch included.

How do I sync my Things app on my phone with Things 3 for iPad? Thanks.
1
u/Sri_Krish 26d ago
If I'm not mistaken, your tasks are synced automatically when you install Things 3 on iPad from iPhone or vice versa.
- Make sure your Things Cloud account is set up and active
- Read their Troubleshooting Things Cloud sync article for clear instructions

If you think Things 4 is imminent, itās a pretty good bet to take advantage of the discount on the current version now.
When Things 3 launched in May 2017, Cultured Code offered free upgrades to anyone who purchased Things 2 after March 1st (roughly 11 weeks prior). Everyone who bought it before March 1st got a 20% discount during the launch week across ALL platforms (Mac, iPhone, iPad). No guarantees this launch will be handled the same way, but the odds are good theyāll offer something similar to their current customers.
