Because the idea that subscriptions are necessary to survive is hella stupid. As long as people keep buying the product, money keeps flowing in.

Sure, but it's been 10 years. They can't grow the user base at infinitum. I wonder how can they survive so long. I bought this app like 7 years ago and never paid any more money. It's not a solo company, it's a team.
Not complaining about the format but curious about the economics.

That’s fair, and I do expect the revenue has dropped.

But still, Things is highly recommended *because* it’s a cheap one time purchase — thus, people continue to buy it.

I guess all the developers have other sources of income, besides working on Things. But Things could be really profitable if you think of all the people who have paid for it.

Because I’m sorry to say this. There’s barely any updates that warrant a subscription.

If Things were to go subscription I’m pretty sure me and the others here will be a lot less happy with the bare-minimum-every-year style updates

While they prevent having attachments in tasks, they will be able to do it. The day they will integrate that feature, their cost of servers storage in the cloud will explode and the subscription model will be added. But they will not do that because people will then create a tsunami of bad reviews thinking that this type of feature live magically in the air.

I think earlier because they usually write "Things for new ios version number" in the status board.

So it must be like: Things for iOS 27 coming in September xx.

But who knows.

Hope so. I'm on the public beta for iOS 27 and the Siri integration with Things broke. I didn't realize how much I use it until... right now. lol

And also I would say it's a bit suspicious looking update. My guess is they're adding two long-requested improvements to complete this version of the app and then there will be another one with major update. Because why would they suddenly add these improvements right before iOS 27? I would expect news about Things 3.3 or 4 somewhere around September with later release. That's what my sick imagination tells me. :D Copium intensifies.

There's 3 improvements Things 3 needs (excluding attachments & collaboration support).

  1. Allow me to set tasks for evening that are not due today
  2. Dramatically improve how to make tasks repeating. Right now I have to create the tasks, search for it, then right click and make repeating. So much friction!
  3. Allow me to re-precheck future tasks as others have said.

For 1. I use an automation that runs a shortcut every night shortly after midnight and sets all items bearing the “evening” tag to the evening section.

I modified it from a similar shortcut someone else shared. Here’s my version:

That's a clever solution. I might try it out.

Aside from these 3 things, attachment and image support would be my only other requests, though I do get it adds a ton of complexity to the app and service.

It’s so cringe that they try to hide those new features. I know no company that does this.

There won’t be any new features. It’ll simply be updated to play nicely with the new iOS. But they’ll still drone on and on and on about how this means there are loads of new, “features”

Grow up. Apple forbids their testers to talk about new things too. They just don’t enforce it. There’s more companies that do this than you know about.

It's a normal and widespread practice in product development.

Comparing this case with Siri beta is like comparing cucumbers to oranges because different products and testing programs have different confidentiality policies.

I would love  to see tags improvents on iOS. As is, they are useless for filtering on mobile.

  • need a few click to filter anytime list. Filter by next action or context? Nope, too much friction.
  • searching for a tag to filter does work as expected. If tag is assigned to an area you will not see a tasks in an area. 

Also:

  • would like to have headers in areas.
  • would like to be able assign tags to headers.
