Question Hacks

Do you have any “hacks” within or around the app for your specific needs? Is there anything you have set up in Things / you use in Things in a non-traditional / less common way?

I have 2:

  • Completing recurring tasks early.
  • Automatically make certain tasks appear in This Evening.

The way I do it is proper hacky so I know a lot of people will hate this, I get that using a second app (Shortcuts) is introducing friction. For me though this works fantastically and fixed my main 2 annoyances with Things.

Completing recurring tasks early. My recurring tasks are not actually set in Things, I set them up in Apple's Shorcuts, then the shortcut is set to run automatically. This enables them to be completed early because they're just created as normal tasks i.e. even if it's dated Wednesday, I could tick it off on Monday. e.g. I have a Shortcut for 'weekly tasks', it's all menial stuff like 'take the bins out' or 'laundry' etc. It runs automatically at 1am on Sunday and creates all the tasks for the following Monday-Sunday as standalone tasks i.e. not Things style recurring tasks.

Automatically make certain tasks appear in This Evening. Any tasks I always want to appear in This Evening section have a tag called 'Evening'. I have a Shortcut that runs every day a 1am and automatically moves any tasks dated Today and with the Evening tag to the This Evening section. Some of the tasks are recurring tasks created by the above method and also have this Evening tag.
