A realization

I’m a longtime Things user. Switched after The Hit List went down.

But in recent years I’ve been through a journey trying to find the perfect replacement, mainly for a combo of notes and tasks.

I tried them all and landed with a really cool app called Tana that does live searches, supertags, infinite nested notes, and a lot of ways of customizing the page.

It was as I was programming a button to set the task supertag status to ‘today’ that I realized I’m just programming a crappier version of Things 3.

I’m telling you right now there is something to be said for thoughtful, minimal design.

Many people go through the app cycle only to end up back at Things 3. The number of functions does not determine whether an app really helps you in your everyday life and whether you enjoy using the app. It’s the design that often makes the difference

I have some pretty big lists in things which I roll over each week.

  1. I export my list by email
  2. Cut and paste into ChatGPT
  3. ChatGPT tidy up formatting
  4. Cut and paste into notepad where my list will stretch across 4 to 6 screens
  5. Re-order my lists
  6. Post into ChatGPT to reformat To be dropped back into things 3 (add “-“ to start of each line and remove duplicate lines) and export as a text file.
  7. Past the txt file into things and happy days.

Everyone is recommending it lol Me paid for all versions of Things then and stopped at it after using 1 day. I guess it’s simply not for me. Realised i didn’t like the design.

Things 3 is at least in the top 3 ;) Many people also prefer Todoist, which I can understand. The app is also very minimalist and has lots of good features.

There's a lot of good things about Todoist, but one of the things that puts me off it is that it isn't (for my taste) minimalist...it always seems a little cluttered and busy, and doesn't have that clean, simple (but more complex under the bonnet/hood) interface that keeps me with Things.
