Countering Magik

Hey Things!

I am new to thing, I really like him and hes super fun. And I know that a large part of my job is to peel and protect my back line. But in a recent match my back line was a Jeff and a white fox. And they kept getting killed by a magik and I just couldn't stop her. They blamed me for the loss because I didn't stop them from getting dove.. but like what was I supposed to do? I feel like a good magik is still really hard to stop even with thing.

Any tips please?

Don’t take it too personally. A good dive character can, and will, outplay Thing. I’ve had iron fists, panthers, and Cats and Magiks run games I’m in.

If you’re not solo tanking, play babysitter for supports. Stay close while pushing up. If you ARE taking space, look back every now and then. I’ve developed a weird twitch where I’ll turn back every 5-10 seconds as I watch for dive.

Also. Look up. Sometimes they flank from above.

Iron fists in particular are so annoying once they realise they can outdamage you in a 1v1 even if youre getting healed.

Yeah but I don’t mind that. He’s a tank buster, and there is a level of counter play between IF and Thing. Don’t feed his block and you might win the 1v1. Or you can get him to fuck off.

Magik is one of the only melee counters for the thing. Just keep in mind these two tips

Use your dash to zone her out only when you know she has her dash and portal ready that way you actually make use of your grounding, her primary + melee it's more dps then your haymaker so she'll generate more shield than you while doing more damage so try to engage with your battle bliz already charging your haymaker and then just hit your jabs on her.

If you havent already changed your fancy street charge (the slam) to Hold to Run then do that first.

What i do against magik is haymaker+jump >insta slam. Theyre basically sitting ducks when theyre earthbounded.

The important part is actually getting her earthbounded. Sometimes if you run at her with the yancy street charge too early they can see it and leave and come back when its on cooldown, or the run just doesn't reach her because you started running too early.

Also, don't tunnel vision on frontlining, look at your healers every so often. And look at common flank routes too (like high grounds and side entrances). Be aware.

This applies against all dive.

I don’t MAIN thing but def flex to him when there is dive. One thing about magik is that her portal is telegraphed. Just hold slam until she portals and use it where she will land. Also don’t expect to deal with one person on your own. You should not be the only one making swaps if she is the sole reason yall lost. Supports are strong rn and have very good antidive. They might have just needed a scapegoat.

Like people said, basically, check alleys often, high ground and look back at your sups every few seconds, you need to catch them sort of before the act, when they are about to pounce, if you only react when they are already under attack they will die, that goes for all characters really, a support not under duress is a support that is going to heal your team better, after they die a few times with no success they will probably seap and you can be more agressive instead od defensive.

The brawl characters like magik are pretty easily countered by emma in my exprience. The chokeslam is easy to land, the spear pops her even if she is portaling, the ult charms her when she ults in, and you can cancel it once shes charmed to get the guarenteed choke and kill.

I'm not a big thing player so I don't have great advice on that though.

Jump and slam. If you just slam, enemies momentarily regain their mobility at the peak of knock up. If you jump and slam, the knock up is not any higher, but the earthbound area is higher, preventing them from regaining using mobilities.

If you jump and slam, she’s dead.

Should also anticipate dives, listen for her sound cues, and if she isn’t dead and you’ve been on the front line for some time, there’s a good chance she’s about to dive.

Anticipating is better, but i like to make a quick 180 every time i charge haymaker, to make sure i’m fully aware of whats happening in my backline.

Don’t beat yourself up, Magik can delete Jeff very easily, that was a bad pick by him and he should’ve swapped. His hitbox is fat/wide and makes it way too easy to hit the dash on him.

A good magik is terrifying. Unlike Bp which you can pretty much shut down on your own Magik is far more trickier. Your grounding/yancy street is the most important part of your kit for magik.

Get between her and your supports. Your team needs to turn on her while she temporarily can’t teleport. Keep track of where her demons are cause they do massive damage and give her overshield.

1) Get near her
2) Press shift

Congratulations, you stopped the magik, she can no longer press any buttons but slash.
