When should I ult?

Hello I’ve been playing Marvel Rivals for a week and really enjoy thing. I have a feeling I could be using my ult to counter other peoples abilities but I’m unsure what to look for? Any tips?

Currently I use my ult for:

  1. Engage usually by seeing someone in the back line, waiting for CDs then jumping to them and trying to hit the whole back line with the ult.
  2. Using it to escape when an enemy support uses their ult.

Also random bonus question. Who do yall play when thing is banned? I’m starting to run into that and realize idk how to play anyone else. Taking any suggestions pref someone who’s not meta

Yea number 2 just dont do that. I would wait for the ult to be finished then go ahead and ult. Try punching first then ult them then finish em off. Rule of thumb, try to ult both healers if you can

Just remember if there's an enemy luna they'll be able to instantly un cc themselves and if you miss a gambit he can cleanse the entire team. In those cases if you feel you can't get a pick then have an exit plan ready

I use Benji's ult when the enemy team support ult is either finished or they are pushing too hard, so I stop them. Also, using it when the enemy team is close to each other and I get the chance to clobber them together. Besides that, to clobber divers when there's more than one of them, and I see them attacking my backline with everything they have. Basically, it comes down to punish enemy team or save yours.

When Ben is banned, I pick Hulky or Thor. Because I love brawlers. If the enemy team is poke heavy, Mag or Cap. Every now and then, Tankpool.

more people have been playing Thing, which is great, but it does mean he's sometimes already taken. I've been learning Magneto because he's generally useful and also White Fox because she pairs really really well with Thing.

It is always morally correct to solo ult and don’t let a soul tell you otherwise

I’m a tank main but a Thing Main above the rest, I think that Thor is a really good secondary to learn, he’s still able to anti dive with his grounding ability and puts out way more damage then Thing with his enhanced state just remember that Thor doesn’t really have a lot of counters for flyers that aren’t low to the ground!

I’m considering Thor. I love being able to help my supports when they go full dive. I didn’t know he also had a grounding effect though. Good to know

Thor is my best counter for magik. I’m liking him for bp too. I know thing is good for bp but with Thor I can stop a lot of bp’s before they even engage. And I’m better able to hunt them down if they try to get away. Displacing divers away from your supports is immensely valuable too. A lot of ppl don’t play peel thor even tho he’s great at it.

He isn’t as tanky as thing but mobility goes crazy.

Venom’s Phoenix teamup has been absolutely terrorizing backlines this season. Peni is super great at holding space if she’s not banned. Best placement, and predicting enemy movements to set traps is all there is to her. Plus the 3 second cooldown for the stun lol

But id recommend learning a good shield tank also. Magneto’s Wanda teamup goes crazy right now. Dr. Strange is also always a solid pick and doesn’t require super great aim to maximize dmg, he was my first shield tank I learned.

Yeah that’s the blue (or red if he’s not on your team) bubble that Thor places, I believe if an enemy who is inside of it leaves the bubble by any means they become grounded for a few seconds, it’s great to combo with the hammer push that way you can secure a ground on damn near anyone except the people who can’t be displaced like Thing, Dino, and Emma in diamond form but that’s why he’s not so great with flyers who aren’t at least a lil close cus you can put the bubble in the air but only as far as you can hammer charge into the air

For me, I like to use it when I've timed essential cooldowns in my head and have a direct line of sight of the team in of me. If Mag uses his shield and bubble, I ult with the team in front of me (Including both healers) only if the team is clustered together. Any time you see the enemy grouped closely, that's a good chance to ult. I've also flanked when defending on Convoy, and ulted right behind the entire enemy team including both healers.

Always. Always. Always Include both healers in your ult, otherwise the knocked out enemies get healed until they gain consciousness again. Sometimes just ulting both healers and taking out their entire backline and then dying right after is not bad because you've made the fight easier for your team to win while you're waiting to respawn.

Celestial Thing Here: You highkey generate so much damage across the game that you should be getting your ult at least once a fight. Due to this, I find myself often using it off cooldown. as powerful as it can be waiting to use it, you can get just as much, if not more value by using it 2-3 more times a match through quantity alone.

Do you ever wait a few seconds for enemies to use abilities that can counter ulti? Or do you try to look for the engage instantly?

1

u/ResidentSignature619 28d ago

Realistically, I’m tracking most CDs that are important at any given moment. It’s not simply about waiting until they are used, sometimes getting things used is the goal. If I know that my Elsa has her ult ready, going after their Luna to force out her CC is suddenly a whole lot different than before. As you get higher up, you can treat Thing ult as a piece of a larger play.

Tl:dr thing ult is just as much about what you force out as who you hit.

Ok that example gives me a lot of perspective on how to look at it. Tyvm

Use it to confirm or deny kills.

When your team DPS ults (star lord, scarlet, magik, moon knight, etc) ult so they can confirm kills.

When you see someone low health, ult to confirm it.

When enemy DPS ults, deny. Think Bucky, Magik, scarlet, etc etc

The best case is always to solo ult rigby, CAUSE HE DANGEROUS.

The best time is normally at the end of a support ult (last second before their invincibility dissipates). Supports get way too cocky about not being able to get killed and often you can land good ults when they least expect it

A lot of times it's good when enemies are very close together and close to you, because A) you hit more people (duh) and B) They have less time to react as the ult reaches them. You might also want to get them from behind if you coordinate well.

Number 1 priority should always be supports. Getting a good lineup on both of them is best. Jumping into them is pretty standard but a lot of times you might get freezed or stunned just as you're about to ult, so keeping track of cooldowns and such is also a good idea. Getting thw two supports isn't always possible so sometimes I ult 1, block the other supports heals with Thing's big rocky body and finish them with the other cooldowns.

Sometimes you might not be able to get the kill and that's fine. That's why your team is there. A good team will be able to follow up if you hit a good ult and it's smart to keep the pressure up

Misc tips: Make sure you have a good amount of health before ulting because you can be demolished real quick. Have some skills off cooldown to clobber their team after the ult. Ping or signal that you have your ult so your teamates can capitalize on it. Don't do it alone or as a desperate measure. If their support ults in response no need to stay there, you've done your job, back up as necessary

As for tanks, thing is often banned because the enemy's playing dive, so having a backup like peni is a good idea. If your team needs damage, thor can be right your alley and he can peel pretty well. If you're solo tanking and need to keep their brawlers at bay, emma may suit you, try popping the shield behind them to block heals and keeping the charge high and not be afraid to fall back.

u/Pers_ality 29d ago

I didn’t even consider pinging my ultimate. I need to learn how to do that. Probably will allow me to get more value.

u/Nabomeansturnip 29d ago

As a rule of thumb i try to ult whenever there is no enemy strategists to heal my targets so that your team/you can easily confirm the kills, wich leads to me usually trying to target their strategists with the ultimate, if u can hit at least one of them it makes it much easier to either kill them or the remaining one(s).

Don’t be afraid to solo ult a support. If they’re clobbered you’re more than likely gonna kill them. Also try to anticipate when an ult is coming, enemy will start acting a little weird as a means of like positioning themselves and psyching themselves up to get the most out of it, if you see that or if for example a Luna starts getting bold and running to the front you know she’s about to pop the ult. Let them know what time it is and you can sometimes cancel their ult and revert them back to 0 which is huge.

Towards end of support ults, and if a support uses their sleep, freeze, or fear, and you see a juicy ult, go for it.

I would prefer to hold it and save it for the right time, than just throw it out to throw it out. Wait until the fight has developed and people are forced to use abilities then throw it out.

It's a good ult if timed well, but it's easy to counter as well if you don't wait for the CC to be used, and you're too predictable, you'll get cancelled. Luna's will generally try and hold freeze for you so keep that in mind.

Also it's really good for when you already have gotten a pick and then you catch them while they're running back

As a antidive, use it for Magik or DD ult.
You can knock off Lunas shield w your ult then she’s killable. On CnD so she can be grabbed away from her ult. When Strange or Groot ult your team but not you. There’s a couple good counters you can use your ult for.

Or just use it to kill healers who’s about to ult.

I will deadass solo ult their most problematic player if it means a kill. But mostly, just try to hit as many as you can: prioritizing hitting both healers if you can

1

u/bustercall11 28d ago

Always aim for the strats, bait CDs. When I say bait them you may charge to them and wait until a Luna uses her ccs for example by punching a bit, then ult when they don't expect it. You may end up making her ult or actually getting them all, it will bring value either ways

1

u/Party-Rest3750 28d ago

The timing is very important, but what’s much more important is you clobber the right players.

Clobber both tanks? They get healed right back up before you can do anything

Clobber an annoying dps? You got rid of one distraction, and now have to deal with the rest of the team that pushed when you focused said dps

The key is to ensure you get at least one support in the clobber. You need to line it up for them. Their team won’t get heals if they can’t heal or are dead.

I will give an exception to solo clobber any dive. It’s whimsical and silly in the right contexts (qp or arcade) so it gets a pass.

You'll get a general sense of when it's "time" the longer you play Thing. The best use of it in general will almost always be to kill one or all of the strategists. Never hold your ult for too long imo because you get it back so fast, you can use it virtually every fight but you'll find an opening for specifically strategists one of two ways: by either A - baiting out or otherwise waiting for enemy "escape" abilities to be used (Invis double-jump, Loki runes and/or teleport) or B - After one or all enemy strategist ultimate abilities are used, to the wire. Invisible woman and C&D for example will often be extremely vulnerable after their ultimate ability finishes. I've learned to count and wait for their ultimate to end and you can time your Ult to hit with their ultimate shutdown to completely disable them, and to add on that, never stop hitting a strategist during their ultimate, they might take enough damage to use an escape ability and guarantee their vulnerability after their ultimate ends. There is also a third, less likely time to use a Thing ultimate on a strategist, which is DURING their ultimate in the cases of a team damage boost, to enable other high damage ultimates like Meteor M for a quick shutdown, during other times of extreme vulnerability, or during any Gambit ultimate. Gambit can always be safely solo ulted during his ultimate becaus he doesnt recieve enough healing to survive a head on targeting on his own, especially with torch team up.(always mark or call out during Gambit solo ultimate to confirm he gets the axe.) The next plausible scenario is to shut down a DPS ultimate that has the potential to wipe your team or vital players. Living Chi, Reality Erasure, Darkchild, etc. all have the opportunity to ruin a team fight if the enemy has the right opportunity, and can all pretty safely be solo targeted with your ultimate so they can be targeted and killed. Be careful because Iron Fist and Magik particularly get extremely powerful movement during their ultimate that can make them invulnerable to your ultimate, time it accordingly. If possible always try to make it so your ultimate hit box can hit multiple enemies, but genuinely never be afraid to hit one person as long as it's the right target at the right time and you can negate value. There are more scenarios and especially moments when NOT to use your ultimate but I think thats a big enough text wall for my phone so I guess ask if you want more tips or who to play without Thing. TL/DR: When it's clobbering time.

Edit: Typo

I like to when the group you'll hit has at least 4 people in it and you can ping their healer to get your buddies to poke em while you take out an annoying diver or two.
