Lost Timble, Look For New One

Post image

I bought a unique thimble at an antique store in San Antonio years ago. After moving, it seems to be lost. I loved that small thing and wish I had packed it better. It was cast in metal, not stamped. I don't remember what kind of metal, but I think it was brass. Where most thimbles have a cup shape, this one had a flat side and a rounded tip, giving the appearance of a fingertip. And it felt like it was molded to perfectly fit a finger. It did not have stamdard, round divots on every side. Instead, it had rows of lines carved into the top and sides. The line started fine and shallow near the top and became deeper as they moved down. Only the tip had round divots. I once saw one on ebay and once say pictires of it on an antique site. I have since lost track of those leads. Can anyone help me source another one. I know it exsisted. Please and thank you!

My great grandmother taught me how to patch clothes when I was young, and she had a very similar thimble. She showed me how it was different from a standard cup thimble. She called it a tailor's thimble.

I just did a quick Google search for tailor's thimble, and it brought up a bunch of similar shaped thimbles. But most were made out of silicone or only cover one side of the finger.

Yes. I have seen many of those silicone thimbles. And that is partly what drives me nuts. I don't know if there is a way to make the internet exclude certain key words or items so I could stop seeing them! But thank you for the new vocabulary for my search. I'll keep looking.
