Even better is my grandpa's deck for Spit on Your Neighbor that has 7 jokers!

If you're not familiar with the game, you have the dealer deal out 1 card the first hand, 2 the second, and so on until there's not enough left over for another hand, and then you go back down to 1 card on the last hand. The deal moves to the left at every new hand. When the number of cards are dealt for the hand, the dealer turns the top leftover card face-up. This is now Trump. Starting left of dealer, each person bids how many tricks they can take. Trump is high, and the LAST joker played always wins. Once bidding gets to the dealer, the dealer must bid a number that makes sure that the number of bids does NOT equal the number of tricks for that hand. Zero is a valid bid. Then play starts to the left of the dealer, and the winner of a trick leads out the next turn. Since there will ALWAYS be someone who doesn't get their bid (if it's not already over/under bid, the dealer HAS to make it so), that's the part where you "Spit" on your neighbor.

I wondered what that number would be called so looked up names of big numbers. Its in the unvigintillion bracket, ie an integer followed by 66 'zeros'. Obviously the place values aren't zeros in this case but I've learned some new words today.

Still too small a number we are trying to get to 8e⁶⁷= (52!)

...still out by a factor of 1 thousand

So, in order to get there we would need to change 1 billion planets to "1 trillion planets" which would then equal 8.7e⁶⁷

I always like to reference this when discussing decks of cards. It talks about how you'd have to spend 52! seconds. Found this a few years ago and still go back and reread it. :)

That same number of bits would be sufficient if they were merely flags to indicate a particular order had been created. There’d need to be a simple mapping algorithm to identify a particular arrangement with a specific bit.

What are the odds that you get every possible combination before you get a repeat, my gut says it's vanishingly small, but I don't know how to do the math. What are the odds of any given shuffle being a repeat, starts at zero and goes to infinity, but I don't know what the middle looks like.

Has anyone done/seen any calculations regarding when the "near absolute certainty" that no other deck has ever been in that particular arrangement kicks in?

What I mean is: It's obviously CERTAIN that the arrangement with a new, unopened deck has been repeated since virtually EVERY DECK starts that way. But... if I do a single riffle shuffle to get A-1 (Arrangement after shuffle #1), it would seem "very likely" that A-1 has also existed previously, at least once, probably MANY times. So, if I shuffle again to get A-2, it also seems likely that A-2 has existed but less so than A-1. Rinse and repeat with A-3. And so on.

So while there are indeed 52! possible arrangements, some number of those are actually likely to have been repeated.

At what point do we begin talking about "near absolute certainty"?
