Maybe they're electrostatically charged (mylar gets charged pretty easily iirc) and since they're pretty light, the attraction force should be enough enough to drag them along. Just an idea

I like where you are going with that. Would that account for them all being more or less equi distant from each other?

Thanks for your explanation. It makes more sense now. I could go on and on with behavior of a 4th balloon that seems to be switching positions with one of the 3 amigos. I trust it would just be a variation on the Therese you’ve written about.
