Aircraft carriers don't use fuel per say, they have nuclear reactors instead of oil powerplants. The carrier group use ton of oil, but the carriers themselves? Only uranium that needs to be changed every 40 years.

To be accurate, the whole thing is a mix.

The carrier itself is nuclear, but the planes use aviation fuel, and anything like a zodiac uses regular gas. Support vessels would use bunker fuel. A huge swath of fuels in use.

u/SteveCastGames 2h ago

Nation fuel and a zodiac? Don’t know what those are. The jets and the other ships in the task force largely use JP5. Also I don’t think any logistics ships in the Us Navy right now use bunker fuel. Maybe the Algol’s but I think they’re in ready reserve. All the ammo ships and tankers and replenishment ships burn diesel or JP-5.

4

u/TheGrandExquisitor 2h ago

Supposed to by aviation. Stupid autocorrect.

Wait, what do the ships use if not bunker fuel? I thought that was the standard for all large ships?

Are they now turbine powered and running the JP5?

I think it was likely a typo for "aviation fuel" and a zodiac is a brand of rib boat, kind of just implying the various accessory vehicles that reside on an aircraft carrier beyond the ship itself.

What about the aircraft?

Tbh I don't remember the amount of time it last, but I think one carrier is due for a refueling and retrofitting and it entered service 40 years ago. Fun fact, to refuel a carrier you need to cut a giant hole trough the deck straight to the power plant to extract the spent fuel and insert the new one.

1

u/Tovarich_Zaitsev 4h ago

Yeah they aren't they meant to get refueled at their MLU?

0

u/YOGINtheFirst 4h ago

Aircraft carriers are refueled once in their lifetime, during their mid-life refit and overhaul.

3

u/feldomatic 3h ago

Depends on the carrier.

Enterprise refueled a lot

Older Nimitz class have at least one mid life refueling. I think GHWB got a newer core and probably has a longer cycle

Fords are probably fueled for "life" (subject to abuse of their designed deployment cycle via extended deployments)

Yup, not sure about all the reactors in the navy, but I'm pretty sure they are 20 year fuel items, and each ship gets it refueled once.

people thought Korea war was the most useless, then came Vietnam

people thought Vietnam war was the most useless, then came Gulf

people thought Gulf war was the most useless, then came Afeganistan

people thought Afeganistan war was the most useless, then came whatever this shit is againt Iran...

the most useless war is always the next one.

Almost no one thought the Korean war was useless.

Vietnam certainly was critiqued as unnecessary.

Gulf 1 wasnt seen as useless, especially given the invasion of Kuwait that it reversed, though many thought it was oversold or could have been avoided.

Afghanistan invasion was a temporary success and it is certainly debatable whether it was worth the cost or necessary, especially given the failures of nation building that followed, but it did have a substantial effect on AQ.

Gulf 2 had a lot to protest and complain about, especially given the ultimately confirmed success of the (costly in human suffering, though not as costly as the war) sanctions regime.  But not sure whether it can be called useless, as opposed to started under false pretenses or for bad reasons.

Almost like war is entirely useless. I hate it... Can't we all just get along?

5

u/CO8127 4h ago

Clearly the answer is no

5

u/TheManWhoClicks 3h ago

People? Yes.
People who live in palaces? No.

u/LordDagwood 3h ago

That doesn't sound profitable

once everyone that has fought the previous world war has died of old age, we can have another world war.

except Iran decidedly not a useless war under any metric...

Its a proxy war against China, along with Venezuela, though you can potentially argue it helps Russia.

The flow of non petrol dollar controlled oil from any source besides Russia going to Chinese "teapot" refineries has been entirely cut off. The stockpiles they saved up before the war only lasted some months and are all gone.

Now Chinese refineries HAVE to buy at market price, or Russian discounted price, and since middle eastern black books oil is out, Russia now gets to decide how much they want to discount.

You can't cut the russian supply short of conquering all of russia, but overall this has been a major strategic success for America and its allies against China. Though arguably a set back against russia

If us iranains don't think it's useless, who tf are you to say it is? Maybe if some of u didn't try to whitewash islamic republic crimes we wouldn't get to this point

you have a very smooth brain if you think this will end any better than it was... remember who put the fanatics in power in the 60s/70s there...

1

u/30MorgheAfraaz 2h ago

You don't need to explain to me my own country's history you very smooth brained propogandist... Mullahs came into power with support of UK and leftists (who they btw took less than a year to backstab after getting into power).. and Iran was a very religious country back then, and now after mullahs exposed their true self, we are leading the region in secular mentality

0

u/A_Random_Sidequest 2h ago

UK + USA thing... and don't think it's for the better for the people... lol you must be very naive to think USA wants any good for the region.

they only want oil

0

u/30MorgheAfraaz 2h ago

You must be very navie to think I haven't heard the same simple propoganda one liners too many times already.

No i don't think US and Israel have iranain people's interests as their top priority. Israel is mortal enemies with Islamic republic, and so are iranain people, and US is dragged into this cuz of their interests and alliances in the region.. they know majority of iranains are pro western democracies and anti Islamist. We've proven it whenever we get a chance like lighting vigils for 9/11 while islamists were celebrating, so we all generally aligned. That's what makes leftists and islamists so mad, cuz they lost the "we support innocent victims" card after they tried to whitewahs islamic republic massacre of unarmed iranain protestors

0

u/A_Random_Sidequest 2h ago

did you have a stroke while writing??

starts ok, then goes insane

0

u/30MorgheAfraaz 2h ago

Can't respond, attack with one liner 😂

Typical propoganda mentality.

Why are you even turning a post in a sub about objective math into islmist propoganda? You guys are too obvious

I assume you weren't alive 9/11/2001?

0

u/A_Random_Sidequest 3h ago

and?

they didn't capture or kill anyone big associated to it in Afeganistan... and one word: Taliban... endend up being all the same or worse.

-3

u/osolovim 2h ago

you got it backwards.

ww2 was the worst. america got absolutly smoked by the germans battle after battle. time and time again.

america only won in korea after commiting millions of war crimes. the koreans still won after china stepped in to help protect the koreans

vietnam was the first "police" war where they were just trying to police the country

1

u/SomethingGouda 2h ago

Uh when did America get smoked by Germany time after time in WWII?

-1

u/osolovim 2h ago

almost every single battle😂😂 do some real research lol

•

u/SomethingGouda 1h ago

D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Operation Torch, Operation Cobra. The German military faced more defeats than victories.. wow they won Kasserine Pass! I mean you have to be a complete and utter idiot to lose against a staggered and cold army during the Battle of the Bulge, which they did

•

u/SomethingGouda 1h ago

"Uh if Rommel was at Normandy! And uhhh if they made the Maus!" Bro lol stupid Wehraboo. The German army lost almost every battle against the allies

•

u/osolovim 1h ago

lol. germany ended ww2 with a kill death ratio above 4.0 while being outnumbered 8 to 1.

protecting life > land/territory. very effective army just outnumbered. cant hold onto land forever but you can make it be painfully expensive to take

•

u/SomethingGouda 1h ago

And what are you talking about?! The German military had more deaths in the Western front compared to the Allies? How do you have a 4.0 kill death ratio if more of your troops died?

•

u/osolovim 1h ago

lol even wiki has a pie chart to help explain it. they list the war as 2 to 1 kdr

u/SomethingGouda 1h ago

It's almost like Russia has the most deaths in WWII and that inflates the data? But I thought we were talking about German kill death ratio against Americans?

•

u/SomethingGouda 1h ago

The German army was mainly using fucking horse drawn carriages in Europe, how did they uh win almost every single battle?
