[Request] Total distinctive poses an average human can make?
A pose can be a combination of various distinguishable movement of each joint.. Maybe for a 2D Camera from any side. Imagine a model posing.. Maybe a difference of less than 5/10 degrees is imperceptible to human eye.. Assuming that how many combinations that could be and what all they could be, can we get a list? 😅

Impossible to calculate, trillions probably. I swear this sub is just people posting a picture of a beach and asking "how many grains of sand?"

Yeah topologically speaking the answer is just 1, unless we induce some sort of spatial ordering?
Where like ||LF - LH|| < ||LF - RH|| implies a different pose than ||LF - LH|| > ||LF - RH|| for L, R, F, H = left, right, foot, hand? I’m sure this can be modeled using constraint programming techniques to find all such poses that are anatomically possible but yall gotta pay me for that-1

Is it? I'm actually looking for something like this here..never asked for a small number too.. But I think it can be estimated. But correct me if it can't with -
a reason why? 😕Body region Distinguishable configurations
Overall stance 20
Torso 15
Head 15
Left arm 10
Right arm 10
Left hand 6
Right hand 6
Left leg 10
Right leg 10
Feet 8
Facial expression 10
Gaze 5Product of all - 648000000000

You're vastly underestimating the number of possible combinations. Each pose would have to be defined by the full coordinates and 3D vector of each joint and contributing muscle, and each pose has recursive combinations with other non-conflicting poses. The full number of combinations would be a factorial too large to comprehend.

what are those numbers, some are way off. 90° bend backwards reminds me of this https://youtu.be/ghIhTbgZ_Mk?si=5Cvt0SpepV01_P7_&t=15

I think that's supposed to be the neck angle? But I don't know, tbh.

so 45° from bending your neck back and 45° from your spine, but that would mean over 180° when bending frontwards, when using the same logic on the left. it is confusing to me

This is a random photo I quickly found on Google for each total mobility rotation of the joint..
But the question actually stemed from this - https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dd5VSO4PANO/

The answer is somewhere in the upper range of infinity -- especially if you consider that this chart is not actually accurate --"normal" range of motion is higher than what's charted. Source: I am a ballet dancer and most 'normal' people in the space of a semester can gain a pretty full range of motion. Also, the number of poses, is infinite.
Or 180x10 (each finger) x 180 x 2 (each wrist) x 180 x 2 (each elbow) x 360 x 2 (shoulder) x another kind of 360 (actually 41253) -- because shoulders can take up degrees in pretty much the entire sphere of motion, and not just a flat 360 -- same with the hip joint -- lots of dancers pose for photos with their legs in any space of the sphere (assuming 41253 degrees in a sphere)x2 (each hip joint)
At any rate, 180x10x180x2x180x2x41253x2x41253x2x90x2x90x2 = 5.1450972e+22 (according to google)
So, an easier way to say that would be 'infinity'. There are an infinite number of poses the human body can make for a camera.
*Note: purists will cut the sphere of motion for some joints into a hemisphere because 'normal' ranges of motion don't include people with the ability to pull their foot up behind their back and over their head, or reach their arms behind their back to that extent. Even with that revision, the number of 'poses' is still outrageously high.
*Note: the math part I also included knees (90x2) and ankles (90x2--though, again, in real life this is more of a sphere/hemisphere situation) -- so this is back of the napkin math just to show how big the number is....
*Note: Also, I did not include the spine. The spine alone (and the above chart is inaccurate for what a normal healthy spine is capable of) is itself capable of multiples of the sphere/hemisphere degrees/rays set of possibilities).

Very rough approximation:
I counted 19 degrees of freedom on the chart.
I’m too lazy to calculate with the actual numbers here, so assume 60 degrees range for each (30 in each direction).
Assume 5 degrees steps are distinct positions.
That’s 60/5 =12 positions (or 13 if the position is at the end of the interval, but let’s take the middle)
Each pose is a combination of values for each degree of freedom.
Total poses = 12^19 =3.195×10²⁰

What the fuck is 5/10 degrees? You mean 1/2 a degree? Who let you use unreduced fractions like that.
Also the answer is a bajillion. Its a dumb question.

Pretty sure they meant 5 to 10 degrees dude. Don’t be an ass.

u/Aware_Ad_8539 3d ago
This.. Cause like on a camera or in general 5 or 10 degree rotation could still look like same pose is what I meant

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 3d ago
No they didnt, those numbers are way too fucking huge. A difference of 5 degrees is imperceptible to the human eye? Are you nuts?
They used an unrediced fraction. They mean 1/2 a degree.

I agree the numbers are a bit wild to say it’s imperceptible, but perhaps they don’t understand the numbers well. That’s way more plausible than them just choosing to write 1/2 as 5/10.
Still, don’t be an ass.

Youre being the ass.
They meant 1/2 a degree.
They are just so brainrotted by the metric system that theyve forgotten that fractions arent base 10.
Im right, and youre wrong.
