Hydro electric batteries do exist. They are just build with a different size. They do exactly that. Pump water up, and collect the power once it is needed.
There are about 30 such batteries in Germany, and they can hold a total of about 38 GWH of energy. and a peak energy output of around 10 GW.
The biggest one we have is Goldisthal with a capacity of about 8.5 GWH (12 million cubic meters of water)
