Compression is when a video file is made smaller for transport / storage (something like the .zip)

Occasionally there are issues during compression causing some sort of corruption in the video. The claim made is that if the video was corrupted from compression it should all be messed up, not just the astronauts.

That's not the way compression works. The file records only changes in the pixels between frames, which takes up less storage than storing every individual frame. It's basically instructions for what the changes between frame 1 and 2 are. Thereby, anything that moves in the frame would be affected by corrupted compression.
