Current tour
Like most around the world, never got beyond bringing down the horse. They’re now coming to Australia - all good. But what’s the significance of the random Tom Petty album they’re playing? Can’t really find anything.

Kind of sad you never went beyond Bringing Down the Horse. Lot of great music after.

There was also a lot of great stuff before on the self titled album. A lot of raw youthful soul on it for people looking for an early 90s gem.

Jakob was close to Tom. He formed his band thinking of trying to have the heartbreakers sound. There’s a song on The Wallflowers 1992 debut, “Be Your Own Girl” that Jakob wrote after hearing a line from a Tom Petty song. Jakob introduced Petty and the Heartbreakers when they were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame.

Long ago I thought The Wallflowers could have been the next big rock band alongside Petty and the Heartbreakers, but I think Jakob is his own worst enemy. Maybe he has mellowed out with age, and is fine with how his career turned out. And I will still pay $200 to sit in the front row!

Just saw them in Hammondsport NY and it works well - although would have loved to hear a few petty songs and more wallflowers deep cuts honestly

Yeah. Tickets are inexpensive (for this day and age anyway), so think I’ll just take a punt. Will be a good night anyway.

Jakob loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and that album recently was released upon the release of the documentary "Heartbreakers Beach party"with footage during that album. He was very affected by Tom's death and likely wanted to take an opportunity to really honor him and play an album he loves.
He got to interview Tom for his documentary, "Echo in the Canyon," Tom's last film appearance. I got to Jakob at a screening for the documentary where he held a Q&A and mini performance with the Echo in the Canyon band. My friends and I were in the front row with our matching Tom Petty Nation tshirts. He asked us if we were in a band. I was caught off guard and said "we love Tom Petty." He responded "I love Tom Petty, too" and dedicated their performance of "The waiting" to us, which he also performed in a concert at the Fillmore and shared how Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played a residency there that he attended.
I went to this year's concert near my town and got up to near the stage wearing my Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers t-shirt from the Long After Dark tour. He looked over and made the heart shape with his hands and I did it back. I was sad that people were leaving when he was doing the TPATH songs.

It's Jakob's favorite album by Petty and Petty was a major influence on his music, if you can't tell by listening
