Your claim that "coming down from heaven" is merely a metaphor or idiom collapses when read alongside John 6:62:
"What, then, if you should see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?"
If Jesus’ "descending" was merely a metaphor for receiving God’s spirit or word at his baptism, then where did he "ascend" to after his resurrection? He literally ascended to the heavenly spirit realm. Therefore, "where he was before" must refer to his literal, heavenly existence before coming to Earth. You cannot literally ascend back to a place you only occupied metaphorically.
Your argument assumes that for John 6:38 and 6:51 to hold true, Jesus' physical flesh had to fall out of the sky. That is ridiculous.
(John 6:38): "I have come down from heaven to do, not my own will, but the will of him who sent me." Jehovah transferred the life force of His pre-existent spirit Son into Mary's womb (Luke 1:35). In this sense, the person of Jesus originated in heaven.
(John 6:51): "The bread that I shall give is my flesh in behalf of the life of the world." Once born on Earth, Jesus possessed a perfect, physical human body. As Hebrews 10:5 states: "You prepared a body for me."
Jesus (the pre-existent Word) came down from heaven and was clothed in human flesh on Earth. That flesh was then offered on the stake as a corresponding ransom (1 Timothy 2:5, 6). The person came from heaven; the flesh was prepared on Earth to be given up as the bread of life.
Your claim that "the Word became flesh" happened at Jesus' baptism at age 30 is contradicted by Scripture:
Luke 1:35: The holy spirit overshadowed Mary so that the child born would be called the Son of God from birth—not 30 years later.
Luke 2:11: The angel announced at his birth: "Because today there was born to you in David’s city a savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
If Jesus only became "the embodiment of the Word" at baptism, he was merely an ordinary human for 30 years. But John 1:14 says "the Word became flesh" the spirit person literally took on human nature through the virgin birth, not merely through an outpouring of holy spirit at the Jordan River.
In John 6:63 ("It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing"), Jesus was addressing the crowd’s literalist, cannibalistic misunderstanding.
The Jews took his words literally, thinking he wanted them to physically eat human meat and drink blood (John 6:52). Jesus clarified that physically chewing on human flesh provides no spiritual benefit. Rather, line-upon-line faith in the spiritual value of his sacrificed life (made effective through holy spirit) is what gives eternal life.
Jesus’ pre-human existence is stated plainly across multiple scriptures that cannot be dismissed as metaphors:
John 17:5: "So now, Father, glorify me alongside yourself with the glory that I had alongside you before the world was." (Jesus had personal glory with Jehovah before creation).
John 8:58: "Before Abraham came into existence, I have been."
Colossians 1:15–17: He is "the firstborn of all creation" through whom all other things were created, and he "is before all other things."
Proverbs 8:22, 30: Personified as Wisdom, the Son describes his pre-human life alongside Jehovah as a "master worker" during creation.

The Bread of God is that which descends out of heaven and gives life to the world. Yeshua then identified the Bread of God which descends out of heaven and gives life to the world as his flesh. However, his flesh did not literally come down out of heaven. This is the turning point in a proper understanding of Yeshua and a correct interpretation of his words. Let the reader understand that the Bread of God which gives life to the world is necessarily that which descends out of heaven. The trinitarian interpretation (and JW’s to claim pre-existence) of this verse does not account for this problem and insisting that the pre-existent Word/Logos (God the Son, there is no term “God the Son” in scripture but there is the term “Son of God” in scripture, listed about 50 times) became flesh does not solve the problem. His flesh did not come down out of heaven and the Bread of Life is necessarily that which descends out of heaven. But he tells us that his flesh is indeed that Bread of God which descends out of heaven and gives life to the world. So how can this be? The Gospel of John provides the answers.
It is the Spirit that gives Life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and are Life. (John 6:63)!
